I truly appreciate the reframing of this discussion. I find myself increasingly fatigued by the persistent "Math Wars" debates. The divisive and polarizing rhetoric does little to support educators and even less to improve outcomes for students. Too often, the focus remains on which curriculum, instructional resources, or pedagogical approaches, while insufficient attention is given to what is actually happening within mathematics learning environments day after day, year after year, and to the cumulative effects of fragmented learning experiences over time. At its core, I believe we have a capacity challenge. Effective mathematics teaching requires extensive expertise in the specialized knowledge needed for teaching mathematics. As Deborah Loewenberg Ball's research has shown, this includes not only understanding mathematics itself, but also knowing how students learn it, how mathematical ideas connect across grades, and how to make those ideas accessible in instruction. Yet many educators have not had adequate opportunities to develop this expertise through preparation programs and sustained professional learning. Teachers deserve stronger preparation, sustained access to high-quality professional learning throughout their careers, and classroom conditions that allow meaningful teaching and learning to occur. When I read your piece, I could not help but think about what might be possible if this were the way we approached our work in education: a structured, relational dialogue in which teachers from all levels come together to ask, "What is the story of subtraction across our grade levels? What metaphors are we using? Where do they support understanding, and where do they begin to break down? At what point does a student who has been listening for ten years lose the thread of the story?" These questions shift the conversation from defending positions to building coherence. They invite us to examine mathematics as a connected learning journey rather than a collection of competing methods, programs, or ideologies. It is difficult not to imagine how much more progress we might make if more of our professional energy were directed toward these kinds of conversations.
