Five Activities or Four Formations
I first got interested in Pat Martino’s minor conversion method from a post on a jazz guitar forum. Forum members recommended getting the book “Linear Expressions” and learning the jazz lines. There was some discussion of their interpretation of minor conversion and some posted playing the Activities. That’s where it stopped. You had to be Pat Martino to improvise with these lines. I did some research, found Armin’s videos and ultimately purchased his course. I learned the jazz lines from the book “Linear Expressions”. This was before I took the course and before Amir graciously made his Formations available on YouTube. I also learned you don’t have to be Pat Martino to improvise with these lines. Which jazz lines did you learn - Pat Martino’s five Activities or Amir’s four Formations?

Almost same experience here, I did study Pat's activities, never finished the book as it was a little antiquated and I didn't get along with the exercises being chromatic. in my mind it is easier to study following the circle of Fifths. I started thinking about the activities and trying to make sense of the fretboard by visualizing them as a minor CAGED system and adding the 3 notes per string scales to create a zone, then watching videos of Pat on youtube eventually found Armin, and I liked him and what he was presenting. He motivated me to keep studying this way of thinking. Armin is a newer, modern, logical version of the old minor conversion system. I do know the Martino Activities but have been learning Armin's formations as find them more useful but I do keep Martino's 5th activity or zone. They have been so useful to me, they dispel the frustration of having to study a gazillion things just to play some Jazz, and the Formations make it fun to practice this scales and simplifies a lot while motivating me to see more deeply into why it works.

@Mike Setunsky hey! Hope all is well! Could you share whatever you find useful? I haven't been able to play for a really long and tortuous time. Getting Better! I still have the mentality that this approach of minor conversion when mixed with other stuff you like and resonate with, is the way to understanding & Freedom. Having this group to share and explore is a really useful part of the learning process. Thank you for keeping this alive!
Request about Free Live Lesson #1
Hi Armin, at the end of free live lesson #1, you said you'd agree to record an improvisation on Like Someone in Love, the problem being to find a backing track in Ab. Could you just record the chords like you did on your last YouTube video and record yourself improvising over them? It would be really enlightening to watch it and work on it to understand how you mix formations, how you use parts of the melody, how you land on chord tones and so on.

This is a good idea and Reminder for Armin. I'm starting to believe Armin needs a Looper Pedal. Another good pedal for practicing is a sustainer pedal like the Electro Harmonix "Freeze".
Like Someone in Love - Dick Garcia (Transcription)
A beautiful chord melody and an improvisation the likes of which no longer exist. It's not a matter of virtuosity, but of a very moving lyricism. I Hope you'll enjoy this version.

There's a nice Scale arpeggio in the outro measure 65. the Chord is DbMaj7, but he plays Abmaj over the chord in a descending line. we can also play F minor over that DbMaj7.

@Joel Jakubowicz oh! Sorry. I did like that it feels fluid, melodic, coherent, accessible. Don't know how to express it but I do like Jazz or music like this, because sometimes it feels like musicians are trying for the Olympics with speed or crazy outside lines. I wish I could play like him for my own enjoyment. Thanks for sharing and sorry about the long post.
