My first big project
So took on a challenge to create a holiday card for our science center. I took about two months of going from zero blender knowledge, zero mechabricks knowledge, watching hundreds of youtube videos, to kinda feeling like I understand some things, but there is so, so much more I don't know. https://youtu.be/A8wDsBCG7C8 I think it came out pretty well given where I started from.

Since my goal was to create a minifig stop motion like short video, I approached this as I'm not gonna learn everything in blender. Just what I need to know. I'm going to look for YouTube videos that solve whatever problem I have in mind such as importing a mini fig, animating, how to make the minfig do a walk cycle, etc. I'm sure there were many things that I did that could have been done in a more effective or simpler way, but in the end I got it done, and watched and rewatched a lot of videos. First step was to learn how to use Mecca bricks. I used some models and created some of my own then exported them for blender. I learned how to use epicfigrig to rig the figures for motion, and the iconface add-on for animating the faces. Both of these took a while to work out how to use. I had lots of issues with epicfigrig seemingly not working, mostly my misunderstandings. One thing that drove me crazy was, epicfigrig is looking for part 3814 in the mesh name for the torso, to fix it change the mesh name, As long as 3814 is somewhere in the name, epicfigrig should find it. Don't try to rig any accessories like hats or swords. Make sure fig is flat on the ground before rigging. After rigging all my characters, I realized that you don't need to rig every single one. Duh. This is where planning would have helped. If one is just lifting an arm, just animate the arm. This is where local coordinates (shortcut xx, yy, zz etc. ) were a revelation. Seems obvious in retrospect. Delete the empties once you bring them into blender. Make sure to parent accessories to the rigged figure Sometimes icon face puts the new face on the back of the head where you don't see it initially. Didn't always happen, but probably depended on the fig I got. Learn how to use shrink wrap to add logos to things, although it can be finicky in some cases. Moving things with local coordinates was a revelation. That way I didn't have to rig every character if all they were doing is moving one arm or hand or something.
