Hey December Residency Group!
Hey everyone! I have created a discussion board for just the dogs who will be in our residency program in December. Since all the dogs will be on the same track, for the most part, we thought it would be fun for you guys to kind of meet each other, share pup stories, follow along with everyone's progress, and provide encouragement to one another. Feel free to introduce yourselves and your dogs! Can't wait to see everyone next week. Happy Thanksgiving! @Kara Drummond @Stacie Rhoades @Cameron Mann @Kalob Andrews

Can you explain what your residency program is?

@Aryn Thomson thanks for confirming I was thinking it was a B&T
Happy Thanksgiving!
I hope you guys all had a fantastic day and a great weekend ahead with friends and family. I dug up this old video ad I made for facebook I thought you all would get a kick out of. I had to train my dog to jump on the table to do this. He was so skeptical because he knows without a shadow of a doubt that he is NOT allowed to even sniff at food on the table. 😅

Such a great ad, were you worried by having your dog go up on the table it would open up the door to unwanted behavior? 🤔 When my Mali was a 10lb pup I would have her go on top of the tables at the park to train different skills, and now that she’s 56Lb she thinks still ok to go on top of the table. I’ve had to work on her not automatically jumping on top of the table. She has never jumped on top of our table at home.
Nanas first week home!
First week home!! It's been 5 days since Nana has been back home, and boy had she has been trying to see what rules she can push with mom and dad! Having 4 other dogs has added an extra challenge. We had a pretty large, missed learning opportunity the other day and that was on us as dog parents. Jeff was great at giving us immediate guidance as well as reminding us not to get discouraged and that this sweet girl is a continuing work in progress. She knows how to follow the rules- it's our job to make sure she DOES follow them! She is doing so well at figuring the new rules and boundaries. We are both very much enjoying our training sessions and I can already tell the bond between her and I is going to grow so much throughout our continued training and play together. Just wanted to hop on her and show off how great she is doing :)

Love 💗 her strong focus, engagement and that side step in the heel position, all was fantastic.
Using Engagement to increase focus while heeling
Ever notice how your dog will heel for a couple steps and then… check out? 👀 That’s super common — and it usually happens because we either:👉 keep bribing with food the whole time, or👉 expect way too much, too soon. In this video, I’m showing you how I flip that around. I use the engagement drills (you’ve probably seen me talk about these before) as the actual reward. The dog figures out that their focus is what makes the good stuff happen. We start small — like 1–2 steps — and build it up so the dog learns, “the longer I stick with you, the better it gets.” Pretty soon, they’re locked in without you having to beg or constantly feed every step. Check it out, try it with your dog this week, and let me know how it goes. If you run into any hiccups, drop a comment — I’ll point you in the right direction.

@Jeff Thomson Rewatched your video today for inspiration to work on Focus Heel. Amica, my Mali mix has great focus inside the house, outside it’s a work in progress, from being totally distracted to where she will look away at a bird flying by the refocus back on me. Amica loves to do happy spins too, and I noticed you give the Reward Cue = Yes, Signal for Spin, and Treat Reward. - Did you incorporate the spin before giving the treat as something fun to add for Luna or is she a natural spinner like Amica and you wanted to train her when to spin and when not to spin? - By training her to Spin before the Treat is the intention to give her an outlet for her spins, so she doesn’t randomly happy spin and stays focused?

@Aj Ryan that’s great news! Engagement and a deep bond is so important as well as stay consistent on rewards & corrections..

@Jennifer Rocheny Hi I have a MiniPin Mix that was a rehome rescue at 6M and she was afraid of everything and everyone. Things will change, just keep working with her, lots of different experiences. Go going to a dog friendly store and just people watch is really helpful.
