Happy New Year News!
The Center for Whale Research is a part of my heart and when I received this news, I was excited to share it with you. CWR has been studying and counting the endangered Southern Resident Orcas since 1976, providing the only long-term, annual census of this population. For this year-end fundraiser, they set a goal of $74,000 ($1,000 for each remaining Southern Resident Orca), and the great news, the raised $82,265. This is 111% of their goal and this matters because this critical work isn’t always fully funded, and the Orcas depend on it. The biggest ongoing threat the whales face is lack of Chinook salmon, their primary food source. Dams blocking salmon spawning routes continue to reduce salmon numbers, which directly impacts Orca health and survival. CWR supports salmon habitat protection and advocates for dam removal to help restore healthy salmon runs, and a future for the Orcas. Sharing this as a small moment of hope and gratitude as we step into the new year. 🐋✨ Let's continue the happy news throughout 2026! Happy New Year!

Our world is so vast, yet small in the sense we need to save, preserve, and care for all the things! Nothing and no-thing is any less important or precious than another.
New Year’s Eve Reflection 🦉
The owl is a good representation of this time of year. A quiet symbol of wisdom, reflection, and seeing clearly as we move from one chapter to the next. As the year turns, may we carry forward what we’ve learned, release what no longer serves us, and step into the new year with clarity and care. Wishing you a peaceful close to this year and a gentle beginning to the next. 💚

Swifts really can sleep while flying and are the only fully documented case. They use something called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep, which means one half of their brain rests while the other half stays alert. That allows them to keep flying and remain aware of their surroundings at the same time. Here’s the part that still blows my mind: - Common swifts can stay airborne for up to 10 months without landing - They eat, drink, and even mate while in flight Now for a little nuance, because bird science is fascinating and still unfolding: Although Swifts are the only birds fully documented to sleep for extended periods while continuously flying, some other birds appear to do short versions of this: - Albatrosses may take brief “catnaps” while gliding over the ocean - Falcons are believed to do something similar during long flights, but this hasn’t been scientifically confirmed yet. And birds like eagles sleep while perched, not in flight. Nature is incredible. And clearly, the sky is home. 💚
