Vintage Opportunity?
Hey guys! I’ve been wanting to be more active on here - looking forward to being more vocal and catching up on the threads that are on here. Thanks to the leadership in creating a community like this! I have an opportunity to trade modern sealed for some nice vintage singles. Some shadowless bangers like Blastoise and Venusaur (and even a Charizard! But he backed out and went to someone else) as well as a Team Magma and Aqua Groudon and Krogre. The main thing is that most of these cards look like they would be considered MP+ to HP. I have graded hundreds of cards at this point and would feel that most of these cards would score a PSA 3-6 with a little cleaning and work. Is it worth keeping these raw? Get them graded regardless? Or does HP/MP not move well and isn’t worth investing into? What are the other questions that I should be asking? I don’t have a lot of experience selling vintage cards and would love to learn from you all. Is MP/HP cards worth converting sealed for? Some of the modern sealed that he was wanting look into was my booster box of DR, Journey together, and Mega Evolutions. I also have a Prismatic SPC as well that I would be potentially trading towards cards like this. Any thoughts or insight is appreciated!

Vintage cards are in a lull. They are well supported and won’t tank like modern cards could. But their upside is also limited… for now. Condition still matters a lot even for vintage. Mp+Hp quality will not move as easily as Lp or Nm. I would make this trade if you personally want vintage, but from an investing perspective, might not be the best idea especially if modern keeps moving while vintage stays stagnant for a few years. I believe vintage will have its day but it needs a catalyst like pokemon releasing a 151 based game or event.

How this can effect the market?
I am not PokeMV, I am a casual collector with a little business savvy. Take what I’m saying as a grain of salt. If this is true, SV and these last 3 Mega sets are going to be the last sets with modern printing standards. I am excited that I have a position in SV sets specifically prismatic. Why? Because of the scarcity. The market will be flooded with whatever is coming after mega and the latter mega product. The analysis: Overprinting in modern will be nothing compared to what’s to come. This makes the product of the past even more scarce in the Pokemon ecosystem. Growth for the sets I described will hold its value very strongly maybe even see a price jump. Sets after printing change will still grow just slower than what we’re seeing. Conclusion: Invest in what we have now. The market is going down and it is buying szn for any budget. Find what you like SV or current Mega and hold. It SEEMS like it’ll pay off even more than expected.

100% Great point by Valentine. Even if you think modern sets will be overprinted, that just means older sets will be even more valuable relatively speaking. Pokemon company will print a lot more and prices won't be as crazy. But even if you're getting a 4x return over 10 years on a mega booster vs a 12x on an xy evolutions booster box, that is still an AMAZING return compared to other asset classes. And remember, the ONLY reason they bought all this.. is because of the increased DEMAND, and unless demand falls substantially, key products will still be rare - like booster boxes like pokemon center ETBS. This doesn't really change anything strategy wise, because we're always going to be trying to get product AT market. This will make it easier. This will make scalping in the short term harder. Long term, this will build a more sustainable calmer market. All good things. With all that being said, don't ignore traditional investment vehicles either, there is a tech AI boom, that potentially is overheated, but who knows how high it can go, we're entering a new word.
