College Free-Agency aka Transfer Portal
Professional teams have done this for a while and now it appears some Men's College basketball/football teams are also building pro-active "Free Agent/Transfer Portal" wish lists. It involves building a potential roster/list/rank of players that are in other similar programs and then watching the portal to see if they become available at some point. Noticed a lot of coaches watching club games where majority of players are committed to other schools??? Makes a lot of sense but college soccer does not have the budget resources like basketball/football does to build and monitor these types of lists.

⚽️ Wednesday Soccer Roundup: The Changing Landscape of College Scholarships, Recruiting Wisdom, and More!
Welcome to your Wednesday soccer briefing! 🏆 What Do Soccer Scholarship Offers Look Like for the Rest of Us? (An honest look at three real offers and why “28 full scholarships” isn’t what it sounds like) @CollegeSoccerConfidential has a great article on the changing landscape of the college scholarship world. When families think about “soccer scholarships,” many still imagine full rides: tuition covered, room and board included, and a payoff for years of club soccer investment. But that expectation has always been shaky—and even with recent NCAA rule changes, it’s still not the reality for most families. Here’s a quick breakdown: The Old Model - Division I women’s soccer programs were capped at 14 total scholarship equivalents. - Scholarships were split into partial awards across rosters of 25–32 players. - Full rides were rare, reserved for elite national-level recruits. The New Model - Division I programs can now offer up to 28 full scholarships. - On paper, this sounds like a game-changer. - In practice? Very little has changed. What’s Actually Happening - Most programs are still operating at or below the old 14-scholarship level. - Scholarship dollars depend on school budgets, which haven’t increased. - Full rides remain rare, except for elite talent at top-tier programs. Key Takeaway: The rule changed, but the money largely did not. For a deeper dive into real scholarship offers and what they look like, check out the full article here: Read More 🧠 Recruiting Wisdom Coach Jennifer Turner (@CAASoftballAdv) shares some powerful advice: "Recruiting Success = Right Place. Right Time. One of the hardest lessons in the recruiting process is this: Sometimes it’s not about how good you are — it’s about when and where you show up. You can be talented. You can be working your tail off. You can be doing “everything right.”

Going to share this with some friends that are also starting this process in other "non-revenue" producing sports like baseball. Roster size/scholarship is the same as soccer I believe with many of the same "non revenue" producing challenges.

Really like the video. Putting some science/analytic/strategic process into a very emotional and subjective situation.
D1 or Bust
Great article from Erica Mulholland regarding choosing the right path. Recently attending a GA event and talking with a Dad that had 2 daughters that played ECNL a number of years ago. He mentioned the pressure sometimes from a club to pursue a major program v finding the right fit for yourself. He shared that 19 girls went to mid-major/major D1 soccer programs in his daughters age group and only 5 stayed at their original school and played all 4 years! Erica mentioned many great things in her article and the item of playing time resonated with me. From my own experience in College basketball not seeing time on the field/court is very difficult and can become toxic. Find a school thats right for the 1)Person 2) Player 3)Perspective (If you want to be in business-find a good business school that fits 1-2)
⚽ New Video Alert: Trying Something Different!
Hey everyone! 👋 I just uploaded a brand-new video where I tried out a different idea this time. It's my first go at this concept, so I’m sure there’s room for improvement. I’d love to hear your thoughts—what worked, what didn’t, and how I can make it even better next time! Check it out below👇 Your feedback means the world to me, so don’t hold back! Drop a comment or send me a message with your suggestions. Steve
