Please comment on this post with a short introduction about your background, professional experience, research interests, and anything else you'd like to share. I'll start off: I'm Braeden Ostepchuk, a former pro hockey player and mechanical engineer turned inventor and founder, obsessed with studying and building at the intersection of thermodynamics, physiology, and technology.

@Richard Strube you bet - glad it's useful!
How often do you use palm cooling in training, competition, or recovery?
In Modules 8 & 9, we explore palm cooling in depth as an evidence-based cooling intervention to help mitigate heat stress, delay fatigue, and increase exercise capacity. While the research is compelling, adoption across sport and performance settings is still limited. Please take a moment to vote on the poll. If you're open to sharing more, consider responding to one of the prompts below in the comment thread. If you have used palm cooling: - What's your experience been like? - Any specific results, metrics, or lessons? - In what context do you use it - training, competition, recovery? If you have not used palm cooling: - Do you plan to try it? - What is the primary reason you haven't - access, awareness, skepticism, something else? Thanks for contributing to our collaborative learning process.

BOC Provider Status Expiring 2/18 - Get your CEUs now!
*UPDATE: Eligibility extended until 2/18 ATCs: If you want free BOC CEUs - you have 45 hours left to get them (before they expire!). -- I have been blown away by the participation and positive feedback from those who have joined the 0th Law course and completed the assessments for CEUs. So far, this group sits at 803 members with 337 certificates issued (for 2,359 hours). The 0th Law has been a passion project of mine and an opportunity to share everything I've learned in the space of temperature, physiology, and performance, while also giving back to the practitioners and broader community that greatly influenced me in my career. I was fortunate to play NCAA and pro hockey, working with fantastic sports medicine and sports performance staff (as well as personal trainers) and I've seen firsthand how hard you all work, the hours you put in, and how severely underpaid and overworked you often are. This is a big reason that I never wanted to charge for the course, but unfortunately the cost for production, applications, fees, and the platform add up quickly, so after a quick cost/benefit analysis, I will not be renewing the BOC Approved Provider status. - Bad news: 0th Law is no longer eligible for BOC CEUs after 5pm CT on 2/2. - Good news: There are still 45 hours left and it is free (now is the time!). The course and this group will remain active and available as a resource and community, but starting 2/3, it will only be eligible for NSCA and CSCCa CEUs (until 12/31/2026). Thank you all! PS - if you have colleagues that need BOC CEUs, now is a good time to share the course!

Asking the Experts (You): Best Practices for Heat Stress
The group includes highly experienced practitioners from leading professional, collegiate, and private institutions, including strength & conditioning coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, personal trainers, athletes, and others working at the forefront of performance and recovery. Together, we are building a collaborative knowledge base focused on thermoregulation, heat stress, fatigue, and cooling strategies - applied across sport, fitness, physiology, and human performance. To expand the collective insight, I'm asking you (the experts) to share your own field experiences: - Case studies or field observations - Outcomes, both successful and otherwise - Challenges encountered in real-world application - Subjective and/or objective data (experimental or anecdotal) - Protocols or interventions used across training or competition All domains, experiences, evidence, and suggestions are welcome, and greatly appreciated. Thank you for helping us build the premier practitioner network for thermoregulation and performance.

@Ronny Z. these are great insights and strongly aligned with other experiences and literature in the space. CrossFit Metcons in the heat are a great case study with the metabolic demands. Your strategies and advice are great. Lots that can be done that is effective with minimal time, effort, and cost. Thanks for contributing!

@Megan Reisch really great insight on this - thanks for sharing! I would hope that all organizations / jurisdictions have some sort of heat illness prevention plan in place, especially when athletes and workers are in hotter climates and exposed to significant heat stressors. Evidence of preventative measures reducing incidents is about as validating as it gets. Would love to get an idea what's involved in the presentation and what the gold standard looks like!
