I've been listening to a lot of Jungle lately. They're an indie funk duo and they just released an album: https://open.spotify.com/album/5xnXOCf5aZgZ43DgGN4EDv?si=3Bh9cUtlStOurpzbAXrATA Also, Jordan Ward is amazing! He's like indie rnb: https://open.spotify.com/track/6nXiaXqSZAJuOG6q66mZV1?si=2b4cfb43556146b9
Artists targeting African listeners?
Hi everyone, I’m looking to connect with artists interested in growing their fanbase in Africa. Africans love music & the continent can be overlooked by many upcoming artists. If you notice your song performing well on platforms such as Boomplay, which is Africa-focused, there may be potential to grow an African fanbase. Another interesting thing is that streaming platforms like Audiomack & Boomplay have more promotion opportunities since they allow you to pay for pop up notifications, in-app banners & trending features.

Hey @Melissa Kariuki I'm interested
Does artist development still happen?
The rise of digital distribution and social media has changed the way that artists are discovered and developed. While record labels and other industry professionals have traditionally played a key role in artist development, indie artists are now able to build careers without the support of a label, and are expected to have an established following before receiving any interest from labels. This raises the question: does artist development still happen in the same way as it used to? Also, what does the future of artist development look like in the age of digital platforms and social media? In other words, how can artists best navigate the current landscape of the music industry and build successful, sustainable careers?

@Jeff Craft I agree that indie artists need to be better versed in marketing than before. One good thing that has come from this (IMO) is that there is less gatekeeping. Music execs who used to decide what was "good or not" are slowly losing their power to the music fans who now have direct access to the artists. If a third party is handling artist dev, don't you think there is the risk of going back to a model where gatekeepers are deciding what's good or not?

@DMonterrio Gibson makes total sense and I def agree that marketing is a big part of it! I think good marketing can garner attention, but attention w/o good music and everything that comes with it (stage presence, ability to entertain, etc.) leads to short careers. I think music should come first, then marketing. But that's just me...

Music and Tech
Do you guys think that artist should get more into creating tech? That’s what basically controls the industry.

I don't think they need to be tech experts per se, but I think having a tech person on their team will be crucial for them to remain relevant and capture value in the long term. Steve Stoute said in an interview that artists should think about having 'CTOs' responsible for managing their tech platform. https://trapital.co/2021/10/01/steve-stoute-on-artist-independence-unitedmasters-translation-and-facilitating-fan-access/
