Your “why”
A structural engineer called me on a Thursday. By the next Tuesday he had an offer and a $25,000 raise. He didn't call for the money. He called because his son wrestles. They lived in Alabama. The programs there weren't what he wanted for his boy. Oklahoma is top three in the nation. That was the whole reason. He was comfortable before that call. Decent job. No real complaints. Comfort is why most engineers stay ten years in a seat that stopped fitting them a long time ago. A personal reason moves you when nothing else does. Nietzsche said it. Viktor Frankl carried it out of the camps: "He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how." Tony Robbins said it straight: "People are not lazy. They simply have impotent goals." Jim Rohn: "When you know what you want, and want it bad enough, you'll find a way to get it." Frankl again: "When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves." The money came for this engineer. The mentors came too. He didn't have those at his old firm. Both showed up after he decided to move. Not before. The question today is not what job you want. It is what is your why. Getting married. A baby coming. A house that got too small. A kid who needs a better program. Find the why and you will find the how. The information is already out there. A lot of it is right here in this group. You just have to ask. Do you have a why yet?
