I read a transcript from an interview I lined up for an EIT about a year away from his PE. The question he asked is what made the company a lot more interested in him. He asked: "A year from now, what would make you glad that you hired me?" That question got a strong reception. Today's homework (pick one): 1. Engineers ask me how to get into AECOM, WSP, Jacobs. I also talk to the ones leaving them. The reasons are always the same. Narrow scope. Pay that doesn't match what others make. Tired of the structure. Passed over again. So when someone wants a big name, I ask why they want to leave where they are first. The answer is usually the exact thing the big firm gives more of. What they actually want is the name on the resume. I get it. It opens doors. But there are regional firms that will hand you more scope in a year than you'd touch in five somewhere bigger. The name gets you noticed. It doesn't fix the reason you're leaving. Today's class homework: **Where are you at now?** Large firm, medium, or small firm... and how are you feeling about your path? how are you feeling about how your treated?

👇 HOMEWORK BELOW 👇 I placed an engineer who gave up a shot at president. He did it for his grandson. And $170K in Tulsa. He wasn't looking. Had the inside track on running the firm one day. But talent was leaving and nobody was coming in to replace them. His firm wouldn't pay what it takes. So the job he was in line for meant running a firm with a hiring problem nobody wanted to fix. His grandson moved to the area. That decided where. What he talked about most was the new firm being willing to go get people when he needs them. If you've led a team somewhere that wouldn't pay to fill your seats, you know what that's worth. He starts in three weeks. He made the right call. INSIDE TRACK This actually came from an outbound email I sent to an engineer that happened to reach him at the right time. He wasn't thrilled that the job title didn't match where he thought he should be, but his compensation went up and so did his opportunity for future advancement. If he hadn't been on LinkedIn and given me a way to reach him, he might never have found his next best role. That leads me to today's homework. I’m Kiran Chandra, C.Eng, a Design Manager with 17+ years of experience in major infrastructure projects, with a strong focus on Rail, Metro and High-Speed Rail (HSR) projects.
