The real test when training horses….
The real test when training horses is to be flexible and able to change. Every horse is different, but we tend to be stuck in our ways, so being able to read horses is a real skill. Listen and watch, like it’s the first time you’ve worked with a horse. Imagine them as unknown (hard to do but imperative if we want to expand). As a trainer it’s easy for me as I work with new horses all the time and I have to listen to what each one needs, so if you only have one horse see if you can swap horses for a day and look at how you respond: Growth comes from thinking outside the square - and horses love for us to grow

As you say, that takes experience. I worked with a horse last weekend to go through a noodle obstacle. He seemed totally calm, as in not scared, but seemed stubborn as wouldn’t go forward. Initially he wouldn’t walk forward when asked even when not near the noodles and u was by his shoulder. Hmmm preferred to follow. Note to self! Rubbed him both sides with the noodle. Fine. Step by step, eventually, the owner was able to ride him through it. He’d ride through one noodle each side, then 2 each side and 3 each side. That was his limit that day. It was interesting for me as this horse seemed to be just shutting down and showing no emotion apart from planting his feet. Working backwards, I finally found his worry about the noodles. He was giving to his limit of the noodles consecutively striking him on his side. 3 being his limit that day. There were 6 either side in the obstacle. He needed a lot of patience and confidence building. Same as any other horse that is much more reactive with their feet.
Boundaries build great horses
One thing that has really shown up for me with my young horse (Wrangler is a 2 1/2 year old colt I bred) is how little it takes to train a good minded horse: I have done so little with Wrangler and yet he’s doing so many things like he’s done it all before. It’s been surprising but really shows how easy things can be if just the basics are solid. Boundaries built trust. Trust builds connection Connection builds communication.

I bred a colt and filly by the same stallion, born on the same day. Both treated the same. The colt was like he’d done it all before and the filly, though friendly, needed to be taught everything like floating, walking on concrete, tying etc. whereas the colt never hesitated with any of it. The filly’s dam was leased and was stand offish. The colt’s dam was owned by us and was ridden, trustable mount. That’s the ‘only’ difference between the two of them. Regret selling the colt. 😞
It’s a brand new year 🎁
Today it’s the start of a change of pace for me. I plan on doing things differently this year. It’s a time to change and what better day to start. So here on day one I will share with you the way I incorporate change. It’s a little woo woo so if you’re not into being open this isn’t the space for you. Being vulnerable here so bear with me, it’s a hard thing to put into words, and I’m sure some things will be lost in translation, but here goes…. Who am I - the biggest question of all. And a simple one to answer from a space of soul. But let’s turn up the heat and ask it from egos perspective. So in my first session of the year I got a huge, and I mean huge, awakening. Ego - I am of service (ok that’s not a bad thing), below others so I must give (now that’s not so nice) and as a giver I don’t deserve to receive (ok now that’ really feels bad). Let’s look at the energy behind receiving…. And I really start to squirm - literally pulling away and trying to leave - I am so repelled by the thought of receiving (now we ask why and when this became my vibration) It’s in my throat and upper chest, like a weight, it’s thick and heavy and very, very negative. It hasn’t always been there, it’s new in this lifetime. It’s a choice (by soul??) yes by soul. (A punishment?) no an experience. (The lesson?) With wealth we give frivolously, without thought for how the receiver feels. We give to make ourselves feel good, better even, and to help without attachment. (Please remember this is my personal experience in a past life, not the truth) I’ll clarify here, my past life feels like I’m in a castle or some sort of noble place and I am from family generational money. So here (now) I have to give thru service (not wealth) and the negativity in receiving forces me to continue to give without receiving !!!! (Those who know me know this to be true. And know that I really struggle to receive) So to change this vibration I need a truth, and it’s only a truth for me (so it may not be for you) and it’s often hard to find. So I have to ask questions here till I feel a shift. That shift only comes when you have a realisation of a belief that doesn’t serve you ….

It’s healthy that you have ability to self reflect with a positive outlook. Some people seem to be incapable of self reflection and/or ‘choose’ to ignore it.

@Eliza Lane my career path required much self reflection. However it’s not always positive. Self reflection to enable personal change is more difficult. 😉
Let’s have a little fun this weekend.
How about a positive challenge. Try spending the weekend without judging anyone else or yourself! Nothing negative allowed: A task that will bring awareness.
