BOX DOMINATION
Earlier i saw someone posted about box domination, i found it hard to explain in just words, so ive put together some images to help me explain. im going to explain the situations relating to corners. theres alot more involved with box domination that just this matter, but its the most common issue. in image one (labelled with blue circle edge of 18yrd box) i have shown a left hand corner and GK placement with attacker marking GK. i have positioned the GK about 2 large paces forward of his line. The reason for this is very important. Firstly i need space between me and the goal line .... very very important!!! this i MY space and i want to keep it. its my safety net should i NOT claim the ball upon delivery. Secondly it also allows me to travel further out to claim the ball, basically a head start. ive highlighted the rough area that i would expect to claim in easily given the starting position. Note the spaces infront of the attacker are not highlighted. This area is harder to claim in and will need positional adjustment to allow a line through. Again i need the space behind. This is a rule (space behind the GK starting position) that teach GKs at all levels. its the most basic start to box domination you can have. Now, box domination changes throughout the game. in open unapposed play we should aim to "keep up with play" Image 2 (full size pitch image) is my opinion on where placement should be in relation to the below statement ball 1- in or around the box, high risk area, GK needs to be ready to recieve a shot at all times or deal with 1v1. Ball 2 - GK can be slightly in front of 6 yrd box, this will vary in the distance defined by "slightly" depending on pitch size but the shot risk is lower ..... its still there though. Ball 3 - for me this is penalty spot range, i need to press defencive line up and be ready to adjust placement if opposition breaks through Ball 4 - in opponents half, this the classic sweeper keeper territory, id be outside of the 18yrd box waiting to deal with a long clearance from opposition.
