Guess the book from its 1-star review! ⭐
Even well-loved, super-popular, award-winning books have their serious haters! 😂 This is historical fiction. All guesses are encouraged (no googling, though!). This is meant to be fun. Don't be dismayed if you disagree with the review. Any spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors are copied directly from the review. I’ll post the correct answer tomorrow (15th July 2026). ⭐ I agree with (the few) people who've written negative reviews before me. I made it to the dinosaurs thinking I was reading some sort of prologue. No joke. I flipped back to the table of contents, then flipped forward to the next section and the next and the next. Endless interminable descriptions of the development of the area over eons of time. Since some 35,000 reviews exist here on Goodreads with a total nearly 5 star cumulative rating, I guess this book must get fabulous at some point, but I'm so not into it. And I love history. Not finishing. No way. ⭐ What do you think? What's the book? (In this case, if you can think of only the title, but not the author, that's ok!)

@Julia Quay I don't think I've ever read any of his books and apparently he wrote over 40! I realized from posting this that I was getting him mixed up with Edward Rutherford, who also writes epics — and I have tried his London and it was DNF for me. So I was unfairly tarring Michener with the Rutherford brush!

Group read Zoom is tomorrow (17th July)!
I've finished our group read, On the Rooftop by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton, and I'm currently reading the third book in Pearl Buck's Good Earth trilogy and it's fantastic. Our group read call is tomorrow at 4pm Pacific. Check the calendar for the Zoom link. PS This meme is basically my summer strategy...

@Julia Quay The Good Earth is one of my all-time favourite books, and the other two don't quite live up to it — but they're still excellent. I've read others of hers too, which have also been great.
Learned any history lately?
Turns out that maybe 19th century American pioneers, travelling west had it both harder and easier than we might imagine from the books and movies we've seen. Harder because many of them didn't have wagons and had to travel on foot 😬 Easier because fatal encounters with native Americans were rare. According to this article, more people died from mishandling their own firearms that they brought to protect themselves from native people. 5 Biggest Misconceptions About Pioneer Life What's something you learned recently?

Is the Odyssey Historical fiction?
I think it counts! Either way I know there are a lot of history fans in this group who might get a kick out of this Tom HollandS match up.

The current definition of historical fiction is that it's a story set at least 30 or 50 (depending on who you ask) years in the past - ie before the time of writing. This is why Jane Austen's novels aren't HF - because they were set in a period that was fairly contemporary to her. I'm not sure that definition even makes sense when we're looking at something that was written as long ago as The Odyssey. Apparently, there's a lot that's unknown about how much was based on historical facts (as believed by Homer). I also discovered this morning — inspired by your post to look it up — that even Homer's existence as a specific person (rather than an amalgam) is debatable! https://www.britannica.com/topic/Is-the-Odyssey-a-True-Story

@Kayleigh Shoen Yes! And it's so easy to forget (for me, anyway) that their present was once "modern" 😂
