Question
What artists are you drawn to or inspired by that seem the total opposite of you and what you do and people are often shocked when you say you’re a fan of theirs? I’ll go first. Naira Marley, James Blake, & Billie Ellish.

If you had $100,000 to record and release an album, what would you do to turn a profit?
Q for Self taught audio engineers
Hi everyone! New member, here👋🏾 Just a little backstory. I've recorded several songs over the years however, to me, they've never sounded quite the way the should (standard, radio/stream ready). Which, as ive come to notice, has kept me in a "post & delete" cycle. This comes down to the mixing. I've watched a ton of YouTube how-to's on the topic, yet the information just hasn't...connected. it's my goal to be able to successfully mix my own music (affordability reasons) I have also looked into having someone mix for me, but they usually only accept 1 - 5 stems. That simply won't do for the way I record. Also, I use an outdated macbook garageband daw that refuses to update. SO, the question is, what are some of the most helpful tips you've gathered during your self-taught journey to mixing your own music?

@Len I A vocal chain would include a pre-amp, eq, compression, and things of that nature. As for the instruments speaking to each other, listening to some funk music, Parliament Funkadelic, Roger & Zapp, and Bootsie Collins, my mentors showed me the funk. And by them showing me this, you come to find this is what built modern music today! You can hear how Prince, Mariah Carrey, Dr.Dre, and Bruno Mars, are just some of the many that incorporate funk in their music.

@Sepi Tambuza Exactly, call and response! I'm lucky enough to have a mentor that's part of the funk universe. He has been showing me how to incorporate my real-life instruments on top of what we call "beats." As for hardware, do some research on gear for analog vocal processing. Always get what you can afford because this gets expensive, you can always upgrade later!

@Chandler Peppers Right, I feel the same way. I strive to stand in my own box and create whatever genre of music I decide to make
