Tinctures!
Good Morning! Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving! I wanted to chat about a few things I have learned about Tinctures plus ask a question for those with experience! My first Tincture made was a Marigold Tincture, once I started my job at an apothocary I realized my amounts of herb and alcohol were way off. So now when I make Tinctures using an half gallon mason jar, I put in 2 cups of herbs to 1500 ml of alcohol, let it sit for 4 to 6 weeks. Then strain and refill the jar with water... Here is why, some constituents from herbs wont get pulled out by the alcohol and need to be either infused or decocted. Now to my question: I had read a while back that airy parts of plants (Leaves and Flowers) are better Infused, and woodier parts (Roots and stems) are better Decocted. Better as in pulls out more constituents. Has anyone else found this to be true or does it not matter so much?

I found this to be true. I took the intro course from the herbal academy and they talk about the two and when to use them. Primarily, yes for the heartier parts of the plants (roots, stems, and bark) it is better to do a decoction. It gives more time and energy towards breaking the plant material down to get to the properties you want.
