Steel Fell Circular - This Saturday
Steel Fell is a great choice for a winter walk because it gives you a real sense of height and openness without committing to exposed ridges or technical ground. The initial climb out of Grasmere is steady rather than sharp, which is ideal in colder conditions, it warms you up gradually without spiking effort. Once higher, the fell tops are broad and forgiving, with plenty of space to move comfortably and take breaks out of the wind if needed. The weather may break affording us clear winter light and long views, especially across the central fells. The loop works well at this time of year because the descent is gentle and varied, avoiding steep, slippery drops. It’s a route that flows nicely, keeps momentum, and feels satisfying without being draining. Cold, quiet, open, exactly the kind of walk that clears the head and sets the week up well.

@Ashley Moran That would be great. Happy to take recommendations too as I totally agree, it’s a ‘more the merrier’ approach to information, intelligence and guidance.
This Saturday – 14th February | Steel Fell Circular, Grasmere
This Saturday we’ll be heading to Grasmere for a classic Lake District circular taking in Steel Fell, Calf Crag, Gibson Knott and Helm Crag. It’s a brilliant route that gives you a real sense of journey without feeling rushed or extreme. We start with a steady climb out of Grasmere, gaining height gradually before opening out onto wider fell tops with long views across the central Lakes. From there, the route flows nicely across the ridge before descending back towards the valley. Route details: - Distance: ~12 km - Ascent: ~690 m - Time: Around 4–4.5 hours - Difficulty: Moderate hill walk This is a steady, purposeful walk, plenty of time to take in the views, pause where it feels right and keep the group moving comfortably together. It’s not a race and there’s no pressure to perform. You’ll need proper walking boots, waterproofs, warm layers, food, and water. As always, we’ll keep an eye on conditions and adjust if needed. A proper winter Lakeland walk, done at a sensible pace, in good company. One good walk at a time.

Welcome to Walking in the North
Thanks for being here. This group exists for one simple reason: to make weekends feel more grounding, not more demanding. We organise purposeful, well-planned walks across the North, steady pace, good routes, no pressure to perform. Some people come to talk. Others come to think. Both are equally welcome. This isn’t about step counts, speed, or fitness challenges. It’s about getting outside, moving consistently and going home clearer than you arrived. A few things worth knowing: - There’s no obligation to post or comment - Different paces and reasons for walking are respected - Quiet walking is just as valid as conversation - The walk always comes first If you’d like, introduce yourself in your own way, where you like to walk, or what you’re hoping to get from being here. If not, that’s fine too. Routes and walk ideas will be shared regularly. Join what suits you. Skip what doesn’t. One good walk at a time. Tell us why you are here?…
