Why do we feel so much resistance when we decide to change? You decide: I’m going to start exercising. I’m going to speak differently. I’m going to stop avoiding this conversation. I’m going to create a new routine. I’m going to choose differently this time. And suddenly… Resistance!! Your mind begins negotiating. “Tomorrow.” “This isn’t the right time.” “Maybe the old way wasn’t so bad.” That does not necessarily mean your new direction is wrong. Science gives us several reasons why change can feel difficult. 1. Your old behavior is already automated. 2. The familiar option requires less effort. 3. Difficult decisions pull us toward the default. 4. Your goal and your habit can exist at the same time. So when resistance arrives, instead of immediately asking: “Why am I sabotaging myself?” Try asking: What is the old automatic response here? What is the new choice I am trying to teach? Can I make that choice 5% easier? What cue can remind me? What will I do when the old impulse appears?\ SHARE your Observations and Findings...
