This can be a tough question because in the world of industrial machines it’s often one machine for one job. So it depends on what type of sewing you are doing. My Singer 20U (straight & zigzag for dressmakers) was great for a lot of things. But if I was trying to sew layers of denim or heavy leathers or marine vinyl I really needed to use my heavy duty walking foot machine. If you sew a lot of things in the round or small things that are hard to sew on a flatbed, you probably want a post bed machine designed for the materials you’ll use most. Some are set up for dressmaking operations while some are set up for saddle makers. If you’re just looking for basic speed and straight stitch function there are several Juki models that will serve you well. Personally, I loved my Singer 20U because it had the zig zag option even though it’s not as simple to switch over as a domestic home machine. I recommend used if you have a decent mobile mechanic that can come to you to help set it up properly. If you’re buying new, get it locally so they can deliver and set it up for you and provide you with a service plan. In both cases ask for some education on best use and maintenance. And be careful because you’re moving from a machine that might sew 800 stitches per minute to a machine that can sew 5000-8000 stitches per minute. These are beasts! Wonderful beasts, but beasts all the same. Have fun!
