As we've discussed previously, classroom teachers make the difference. I guess if I were just starting a teaching career right out of college I may feel differently about the perceived "threat" AI poses in the classroom. This quote sums up the mindset of some of my younger colleagues: "When a result can come from someone outside the credentialing system entirely, the question stops being “can AI do mathematics?” and becomes “who gets to be a mathematician, and what counts as doing the work?” The mindset of some is; Will I be questioned as to whether or not I'm doing the work? I believe that this will be an ongoing saga for years to come.

I can definitely relate to the twinge you speak of. Over the couple years that I've taught math there have been questions asked that I was not prepared for, was not 100% sure of the answer. What I've learned to do over by 32 plus years in the legal profession I've learned to "know what I don't know". So I'd tell the student I'm not 100% sure of that but I'd research it and get back to him/her. I believe there's no shame in not knowing. The shame is giving a student an incorrect answer/explanation. This quote also struck a chord with me; “have more than once expressed frustration because professional development advice and supplemental materials undermine district-adopted curricula and instructional approaches.” Too many PD sessions just for the sake of PDs oftentimes causes unnecessary stress and sometimes confusion in the ongoing effort of just "keeping current" with the curriculum.

@Kevin Berkopes One profession notably missing is education. However, a lot of my younger colleagues are still feeling uneasy about the prospect of AI substantially entering our ranks. I know one article will not ease those fears but for reasons we've previously discussed AI will not be the dominate resource in the classroom.
Course 1: The Sense of Magnitude 5 Reflection
Think about a concept you teach — any concept involving quantity, measurement, comparison, or proportion. Post here: Walk through the three augmentations for that concept: 1. Precision — What vague perception does this concept make precise? 2. Shareability — How does this concept allow students to communicate what they sense to others? 3. Testability — How does this concept allow a claim to be checked against reality? If one of the three augmentations feels harder to identify than the others, name that too. It may reveal something about how the concept is currently being taught versus what it could become.

A recent lesson I taught was finding the area of composite figures. The vague perception for some students is to add the base and the height. The precise concept, of course, calls for the multiplication of the B x H. This allows the students to share the formula of A= BxH.
