Any hidden story is internalised when we buy into other people’s judgments, falsely believing that there is no other option than to live our lives according to the frame someone else has prepared for us. So how can we find a hidden story that runs our life? It’s about noticing that there might be a difference between what we imagine to be versus what we believe. One can be negative, and the other one can be positive. The phrase ‘I imagine it to be’ discloses the hidden narrative you’ve adopted. To realise what story you’re in, look at possible disparities between the statements ‘I believe that’ and ‘I imagine it to be’. For instance, ‘I imagine the rich people to be cruel’. If it comes with ‘I believe the rich people are good’, the story you live in needs the rich to be cruel, so you can play your part in it. To reject this narrative and your role in it, you need to go back in time to the moment when you bought into it. And then disregard the assertion as a matter that is not true and does not serve you. If you’re struggling with it, it can be helpful also to ask yourself these two questions: Whose criteria do I deem absolute about this? And Who am I for that person? Now I’d like you to test if you’re on your desired trajectory. I imagine (those who I wish to become) to be………. See what comes to your mind. Know that a negative is specifically limiting because it is impossible to become a person we ascribe negative qualities to.
