An older van is easier to maintain?
Hi! I never posted on this platform so not sure I'm doing it well. I just heard that vans older than 2005 are easier to fix and maintain but I am still not sure it would be a good idea to buy an older van, considering I will invest a lot in the interior. What are your opinions? This is part of the chat gpt's answer: "Why Older Vans Are Easier to Fix 1. Simpler mechanical systems (less electronics) Older vans — especially those made before the mid-2000s — rely on mechanical rather than electronic systems for things like fuel injection, ignition timing, and diagnostics. That means: - You don’t need a specialized computer to read error codes or reset the system. - A mechanic anywhere in the world can usually understand how to repair them with basic tools. - You can often fix small issues yourself on the road (broken belts, fuel lines, sensors, etc.). Example:A 1998 Mercedes Sprinter or a 2003 Ford Transit can often be repaired in a small-town garage in Spain or Morocco. A 2019 Sprinter, on the other hand, might require a diagnostic laptop and a certified workshop."

maybe, yes. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix stuff in my van on my own,and that sounds to be possible with older vans. but then again, you still have to buy parts, you cant print them with 3d printer yourself :D.

We built this open vanlife community so vanlifers, RV travelers, overlanders, and everyone enjoying life on the road can connect, share tips, and feel part of a bigger road family — no matter where you're parked. Unlike FB groups, there are no ads, no trolls, and no algorithm hiding your posts. Everything stays organized, searchable, and easy to find — so you can actually keep track of the good stuff. ✌️ 👇 START HERE: 1. Introduce yourself – Who you are, what you travel in, and why you love vanlife. (+1 for pics!) 2. Engage – Find 3 posts or comments from others and reply with something real and thoughtful. This is YOUR community — the more you share, the warmer the fire gets. So pull up a chair, roast a virtual marshmallow, and say hi. 🔥 The road is always better with good company. ❤️ — Rens P.S. If you ever feel ready to meet your road family for real, we can't wait to welcome you into The Vanlife Network! 🔥

Hi! I'm Andreja from Croatia, living in the south of Spain most of the time. I am just attending driving school because of my wish to live in a van. I love tiny living spaces and want to also build a tiny house on my own one day. I plan to buy a Ford Transit or Fiat Ducato or Citron Jumper and make it my home. I plan to convert it myself even though I don't know where I'm gonna park it while I'm converting it. I wanted to buy it now and live in it parked somewhere while I'm attending the driving school because renting a flat is so expensive but everyone told me it's not a good idea to live in a van without a driving license :). I've lived in 12 countries but I settled down in Europe lately.
