Visiting Andreas cobin
I just visited Andrea’s cobin out here in Saint Helena Ca where she is building herself a Palletable Cobin. Thought y’all would like to see her progress. She’s definitely needing some help with the Cob so we’re talking about putting together on the sort of work party to help make that happen.

It was so good to meet again, Miguel. Thanks for stopping by and sharing the progress with the community and putting out the call for a work party. 🤍🤍🤍🤍
Digging post holes
Dug all the holes for the 12 sided cobbin, rented a groundhog, $100 for four hours. Was able to dig all the holes in about a half an hour 💪. I’ve got another gazebo project. I’m working on, with 8 x 8 posts, so needed a 12 inch diameter hole for that, so I just used the same auger bit for the cobbin, the holes are definitely wider than needed, oh well. @Sir Cobalot what is the exact distance you recommend for the 12 sided from center point to inside post?

Totally worth the $100!
Finished Palletable Cobin in Watsonville at the Feel Good Canpground
Here is the finished cobin. We planted the garden on the roof yesterday and had fun enjoying the light show caused by the bottle star and stain glass

Beautiful work! It looks so good! Love the draping succulents and little end cuts at the bottom! I noticed this one doesn’t have the blocking and shorter (jack?) rafters. Sorry, I don’t know the correct term. Is this structure smaller or how do you determine when you need the blocking and shorter rafters between the long ones? Is this an octagon?

@Sir Cobalot Thanks for the reply. I think I get what you’re saying. Yes, would love for you to stop by!
Earth bag and then cob
Every one. I am concerned on this earth bag method for cob. I am reminded to ask since Miguel RE. I have seen known docs. on a family doing earth bags. What I see online is warnings to not do this cause it collapses the buildings. Now, I believe this may be the case even with a foundation or perimeter foundation, lets say concrete also. Alot of work, so to have a building collapse after or eventually is not fun nor safe. Just saw on this from The Mud Home:

@Nina Larbalestrier This page shares a little about some testing that was done and how these structures have survived a 7.9 earthquake. The dome shape makes them very strong. https://calearth.org/pages/what-is-superadobe

Decagon cobin with loft
Thank you for this community and all your hard work building and making these concepts accessible, Miguel! I thought I’d introduce myself and share a little bit about my project with y’all. I began building a cobin last summer but have really limited time to work on it so I wrapped it in tar paper and tarped it during the last rainy season and now this one as well. I went a little rogue with the design which has introduced some issues. I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way without this community but hopefully it will all work out in the end. I’m hoping to get some windows and a door and start framing them in during the rainy season so I’m ready to cob when the time comes but it’s not likely that I’ll find the time so this project may continue longer. What can I say? I’m one (very busy) human!

Yes! The loft has been tricky. I still haven’t settled on what supports to add that won’t cut into the space too much. The ceiling as a little funky since I didn’t rip the boards to all be the same width but I’ll just have to live with that! The compound miters were fun. 😆 Some of the cuts were very custom as there was some variation. I think I had to redo two of the cuts. Oops! Yeah, the pallets were manageable but time consuming. They just happened to be at a project a few houses down so I swooped on them. I’m in St. Helena. Definitely reach out if you’re in the area again and swing by! I think we met years ago when I was living in Camp Meeker and walked by a house where you were building a cob oven. I asked if I could take a peak and you and the owner let me! I was going to try to frame in the door and windows over the rainy season as I have it wrapped in tar paper and tarped the roof for now. I could still do the interior framing though. Then get the roofing on and work on the cob. I need to get the windows and door still though. And I’m a little pressed for time right now with some other projects. I hope I can get to it though!

@Sir Cobalot Yes, I’m in SH. That would be great for you to stop by. I’m always around. I’m usually free before 3 or on the weekends. Other times can work too but are trickier.
