Whats blooming in your area?
Comfrey was blooming yesterday as well as feverfew which is early for us. It has been very dry and warm comparing to other years so it seems nature is a bit a headed; my spinach already bolting. With that in mind Saturday will 30's (3C) Saturday morning. I have several tomato plants up over a foot tall so might need to start the poly tunnel heater Sat morning to keep them happy. Cover crop of cereal rye, hairy vetch, triticale and red clover is coming along nicely. Will terminate in about two weeks to plant corn and pole beans. My thought is that the clover will remain as a living mulch.

@Jim Flach the trees were very small around so he didn't ingest much but all the way around the tree. If a horse can wreck something....they will! Apparently the highest levels of cyanide are not in the bark. But he's still alive so I guess we're ok. What a guy!

I think we're gonna need hints 😆
Soil depletion
UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that topsoil is being lost 10–40 times faster than it is being replaced. Did that number land differently because you were already thinking about your own yard?

And this is what happens when you don't support cycles on land. Has anyone seen the documentary The Biggest Little Farm? They take desolate land and bring it back to life. Just fascinating stuff!

Steps for a new area
Observe first, start one small area well, build soil deeply, learn timing, then expand toward family food, fertility, berries, fruit, and storage.

Initially, my garden space was a pen for alpacas before I bought this property. Then I put Heritage Black Pigs in the space for a season and let them do their digging. They ripped up the sod and dug everything up. Then that year I rototilled and had garden beds in the ground. If I had waited and seen just how much water we get over winter I probably would have skipped that part and built raised beds from the start. But I wasn't patient enough and my dreams got the best of me. Lol
