How do we make choices toward a better world 🌎?
It’s easy to feel like we’re just ants in a giant system... politics, big tech, big oil, pharma, media, all of it. And in some ways we are merely ants to the earth and on a soul level this life in a blink in time.. But there are still a few levers ordinary people actually have. First is where we spend our money. Every dollar supports a system, so whenever possible I try to support smaller businesses, ethical companies, local producers, creators, and organisations doing good work. It doesn’t have to be perfect — almost every big company has something messy behind it — but direction matters. Second is where we give our attention. Algorithms run on engagement, so avoiding rage-bait, extreme content, and manipulative media actually matters more than people realise. Following thoughtful voices and real experts helps shape the information ecosystem. Third is community and relationships. Real life networks — friends, local groups, communities, businesses — are still the most powerful counterbalance to big centralised systems. The more strong communities exist, the less control giant institutions have. Fourth is building and supporting alternatives. Whether that’s ethical tech, renewable energy, independent media, local food, education initiatives, or mission-driven businesses. Real change usually happens when better systems are built, not just when people boycott things. And finally, staying thoughtful and informed without burning out. The world is complex and no one can perfectly avoid every problematic system, we all use phones, banks, platforms, etc. The goal isn’t purity, it’s trying to push the world a little more toward fairness, ethics, and humanity where we can. Small actions across millions of people do add up over time. History shows that cultures shift slowly through everyday choices, conversations, and communities, not just through big political moments. So try to think less about “how do I avoid every bad actor” and more about “what kind of world do I want to actively support and grow.”
