I’ve been making my first lined patchwork tote bag with interfacing this week from my bargain curtain collection. Following a YouTube video. Making the patchwork was pretty exasperating as I chose the wrong fabrics - one of which frays badly 🫣 I have completed my first inner zip pocket, and the lining is from the curtains I chopped up. Lining also seems to be significantly bigger than the bag it fills 🙈. The bag is not as tall as it should be - I think my seam allowances weren’t generous enough! Also, I managed to sew the handles inside the lining 🤦‍♀️ So have had to take them off and just need to put them back on to finish. Lots of lessons learned and I’m quite pleased with myself regardless!
What was your first sewing project...?
...OR, if you haven't jumped in yet - what do you hope to sew when you learn?

I’ve made two bags from ‘so crafty’ mainly just to get confidence with using my machine and its stitches etc. I want to chop up my wedding dress to make a decorative patchwork, either a quilt or a piece I can frame. The dress has sequins, tule, satin etc to play with.

@Charmonix du Venage I will, thank you. It’s quite a big dress and very heavy so storing it long term is not ideal!

I have completed my apron. This is the first time I did ruffles.

Love this!
My next thing!
I’m chuffed with this. Another massive old curtain (£2), with a heavy, slightly plasticky-feeling lining - perfect for my sewing machine’s jacket! It’s ‘roomy’ and not perfect - and I still need to work out how on earth to make a little flap in the top for the handle - but I’m chuffed with it nonetheless 😊

My first thing!
I’ve made two 21” cushion covers as a little something for my mum to put in her newly purchased campervan 😊 She’s chuffed with them. I bought some ex display mini curtains and used the lining for the backs. They were £1 each from a lovely factory outlet which is sadly closing down. I used Velcro tape for the closure as I didn’t have any long zips. The first one took two hours of measuring and remeasuring etc, second one took me an hour. More lessons learned!

@Suan Landman it’s lovely fabric. I bought a heap of various curtains to play with and projects. Gutted the shop is closing but I got a stuffed carrier bag of curtains for £13!

I’m 41 and trying to find myself again! Love spending time with my horse and dog - and my hubby of course! Love to learn and challenge myself 😊
