Hello everyone! I'm Alex Parke and completed my first year in coaching this past season. It is a small school in SW Missouri where I coach both JH (6th-8th) and HS. I came into the job late so now that I have a full offseason I'm looking to dive into SAVI and gain as much knowledge as I can to put into action this summer. The biggest things I hope to get from SAVI are: 1. Build a culture that will last where we compete everyday, give our best effort, and find joy in the process 2. Become a better teacher of the game 3. Find better ways to practice that are fun & engaging, but also translate best to games 4. Offensively - Develop basketball players who understand the game by making reads and adjustments, not going from point A to point B. 5. Defensively - Create Havoc that teams dread facing when they see us on the schedule I look forward to learning from all of the coaches here and if you ever want to talk ball, please reach out!

@Daniel Hernandez man can I relate! As a fellow father of 4 I know how busy they can keep you. I coached our youth teams, then moved to an assistant coach role before stepping in as head coach this past year. So if you ever want to talk ball with someone in a similar boat, definitely reach out. Keep up the good work!
Book recommendation exchange!
Hey there coaches, ever since I implemented the habit of daily reading into my live, I have gotten great value from talking about book recommendations with the people I meet. So I thought to myself this is a great community of like-minded people, I bet there is a ton of value in exchanging some recommendations. (Also I am not sure what I am going to read next :P) I would be especially interested in any books that had the most influence on how you all approach coaching. Iam not talking about Xs and Os, but more values, leadership, communication, decisions making and so on. Let's go groups of three here, so my recommendations would be: Essentialism - The disciplined pursuit of less and Effortless - Make it easier to do what matters most They are both written by Greg Mckeown. Honestly I see a lot of these values in the systems thought here, so I wouldn't be surprised if these books are well known to many of you. Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter This book gave me a lot of perspective on adversity of any kind. The inner game of tennis by W. Timothy Gallwey It was one of the first books that had me question they way I was teaching at that time. Great input for anyone having a hard time buying in into a approach of games > drills.

I'd second the recommendation for Atomic Habits. It is a great read with a lot of applicable information that translates to basketball. I was gifted Transforming Basketball, so it is on my list to read this offseason as well.
Drive vs Race
I know I'm late to the party but what's the main difference between race and space and Drive and space

@Mark Cascio Can drive and space still work well with 1 read players? I'm at a very small school so I have to mold our offenses (and defenses) to what players I have. We will only have 1 senior and 0 sophomores next year. We will be a young team and I want to develop a system that we can grow with, but my concern is having players that a limited, does that make it hard to run D & S?
Race vs. Drive (& Space)
I just finished my first year of coaching and we really struggled to score on offense. I've been an avid podcast listener, but haven't been on the site much, so I've started to search on here now that our season was over in preparation for this summer and next season. I was looking into Race & Space vs. Drive & Space, but I was wondering what the main differences were between the two.

Awesome. Thanks Clare! Which one would you recommend for a team with two primary ball handlers and probably mostly 1-2 read players? Ideally I would prefer five players who can make multiple reads, but we are a really small school with a small HS roster size. Also, would I be able to run either offensive system with JH boys (grades 6-8) as well or is there one that is easier to teach? I coach both JH & HS and know I need to build up through the younger teams so I wasn't sure if it would be doable at the younger levels as well.

This is great. Thank you for the help! I've really wanted to implemental a more conceptual offense, so this has been a great resource. My preference is to play fast but I feel my personnel more fits Drive & Space. Does D&S lend to post players? Two of my posts are solid shooters and handle it pretty well, but I don't want to completely abandon getting them near the basket. Is that still something that D&S can emphasize? Not that I'm looking to get a lot of post ups, but they are best near the rim and can sometimes struggle with attacking off the dribble.
Quotes
I usually start every workout or practice with a quote to get the boys brains thinking and was curious if anyone had any quotes that have stuck out to them or that they liked that I could add to my list.

@Jake Diggs Thanks coach! I appreciate you sending the film this morning. Once I get a chance to dive into it I'd love to pick your brain on it
