Diving technique question
I have a couple questions regarding diving, there are some things that I have seen recently that don’t necessarily make sense or align with what I was taught growing up and I want to know everyone’s opinion: 1) I was taught that when I dive, my butt/hip should be the first thing to hit the ground followed by my side, arms and then the ball last. Recently I have been seeing players land ball first. this doesn’t make sense to me for several reasons, first landing ball first means you’re contorting your body down and away from where the shot is going and second, if you don’t catch the ball you’re landing on your hand which puts all your body weight into your wrists and arms. 2) I was taught to dive and catch the ball out ahead of you with your forearm in front of your face. Lately I have been seeing players land with the ball in front of their face. Again to me this doesn’t make sense since if a player is trying to kick the ball they would hit you directly in the face and second your elbow ends up in your rib cage. What’s everyone’s thoughts on this?
Diving technique question
When I was training (25 odd years ago) I was taught that the first thing g to hit the ground when diving should be the hip/butt area as it provides the most cushion. From there it would be arms and last the ball. Top leg knee should be bent up to protect the stomach and forearms protect the face. This is also the technique I teach when I coach. Lately I’ve seen a lot of people say the ball should hit the ground first as the ball will take the most of the impact. I see several issues with this: 1) causes an awkward bend in the body 2) due to the bend might not reach the upper corners 3) if you don’t catch the ball you come down on your hands putting the entire impact of the landing on your hands, wrists, elbows and shoulder
Tips ?
So what do you think? Anything I should be doing better? https://youtu.be/PIJkZ42JGPo And a goal cam! https://youtu.be/TQapTq83H0E

Looking at the first video I have a couple pieces of advice : 1) in my opinion you’re sitting a little bit too far back (too close to your line). It may seem counter intuitive, but if you step off your line a bit more it will help you cut down the angle and maybe get a better read on the ball. 2) on the dive itself, it looks like your instinct is to drop to your knees and almost “Superman” out. This will slow your dive down and stop your movement. I’d say keeping the feet pointing forward, step out at an angle in the direction you want to dive and load your weight onto that front foot. Sit low and push off your front foot at the height of the ball (in this instance the dive would be along the ground since the shot is low and hard). These are just my thoughts, others might see something else and I haven’t watched the second video yet. Definitely easier to say than do. But try to keep your chest facing the field when you dive and push rather than fall.

@Geoff Wood there are a few ways I like to train diving and they are rather difficult for me to explain via typing, but for the most part, step in the direction of the dive (at a slight angle), turn so your hip/butt cheek hits the ground first, keeps chest facing out to the field and shoulders should form a perpendicular line between the sky and the ground

A great way to coach deflected shots etc, without breaking the bank. You can use cones etc but I've found a safer way. If the object you've choosen to put down flicks up possibly hitting the kids, these mini rugby balls prove to be better and quite a good deflection.

I use a mixture of soccer balls and rugby balls as well to work on deflections. The kids love the change and it throws them for a loop when I have a rugby ball in one hand a soccer ball in the other so they don’t know which I’m going to hit.
