Song structure guidance and guidance on feeling the music over just executing a sequence of steps. I know this can be done with practice but I am curious on the proper practice and entrainment for these struggles. Thank you.

Hi @Musa Starseed - can you please provide other examples of the reflector and receptor archetypes, that I can find on youtube? I would like to analyze it from a lead standpoint to know what it looks like. Thank you. One more thing if you could touch on what is the etiquette surrounding a refusal to dance? Just curious.

Hi @Musa Starseed - one more question, what is the etiquette in refusing a dance so that it is neutral? Thanks.

Hi all, my name is Albert Coba and I am a Southern California native. My goal for 2026 was to learn a dance form as a means to connect with my wife as she loves dancing. My overall goal is to be able to take her dancing socially more often now that we have more time to ourselves and to be a good lead for her. I started in March 2026 with salsa lessons. My goal being here in this community is to help me improve in all aspects of social dancing with the overall goal to be able to continue improving and evolve as a strong and confident lead that enjoys the dance and the process.
What brought you into social dancing?
Was it the music? The culture? Wanting confidence socially? Or maybe one dance changed everything for you? Drop below: 1. Your dance style (Salsa, Bachata, Kiz, Afro, etc.) 2. How long you’ve been dancing 3. The ONE thing you most want to improve right now Let’s get to know each other 👇

Hi all, I would respond to this query a bit different. I am not really into the aspect of social dancing. My real motivation is to be able to dance confidently with my wife as she loves dancing. However, as I have explored salsa dancing, I have realized that social dancing is a way of training and putting myself in the uncomfortable space which is social dancing for me has taught me certain things about myself. I have been learning salsa since March 2026, no dance experience of any kind prior, but I have started to enjoy the process and journey or expressing myself in this form. The number one thing I want to improve right now is how to relax more when dancing at home or at the studio. I find myself able in some moments to feel a letting go and sometimes I feel myself not allowing myself to let go and feel the music. When I am in this space I start to notice everything becomes mechanical. I want to learn to feel comfortable with myself and how my body moves with the music.
Quick honesty check… What throws you off most while social dancing?
A) Staying on beat B) Hearing the music but not knowing what to do with it C) Partner connection D) Overthinking and freezing mid-dance Comment A, B, C or D and tell us why. Chances are, if you struggle with it, others here do too. Let’s break it down together

Hi all, I would say A is the tougher for me right now. Started salsa dance learning in March 2026, with the short term goal of dancing with my wife at my sister’s wedding which was April 24. I have no dance or musicality training but sometimes the songs have so much going on that it is tough to stay on beat, especially when the tempo changes throughout the song. Ahora quien (Marc Anthony) is a good example of one that slows down then speeds up then slows down and is changing tempo, knowing the song ahead of time helps but when encountering a new song it is tough to stay on beat, especially if it is fast.
