A 2025 Cornell University study followed senior sled dogs for a whole year to see what happened when they swapped kibble for fresh, lightly cooked food. Instead of just checking their weight or coat, the vets looked inside their blood to see what was really going on. 🩸 🧬 The Setup - 22 healthy older dogs (about 12 years old) - All started on kibble for 4 months - Then half stayed on kibble, half switched to fresh food - The study lasted 12 months with regular vet checks 🍗 What Changed on Fresh Food After just one month, and lasting all year: ✅ Their bodies burned fat more efficiently ✅ They had better muscle + brain nutrients ✅ More omega-3s from salmon oil & chia (good for joints, skin, heart) ✅ More antioxidants protecting cells from damage ✅ Less inflammation and fewer “AGEs” (harmful compounds from heavily processed food) What Stayed the Same - Weight stayed steady 🐕 - Bloodwork stayed healthy 🩸 What It Means This is one of the first long-term studies showing that food quality and processing can make a real difference inside a dog’s body — even when calories stay the same.
