Using Engagement to increase focus while heeling
Ever notice how your dog will heel for a couple steps and then… check out? 👀 That’s super common — and it usually happens because we either:👉 keep bribing with food the whole time, or👉 expect way too much, too soon. In this video, I’m showing you how I flip that around. I use the engagement drills (you’ve probably seen me talk about these before) as the actual reward. The dog figures out that their focus is what makes the good stuff happen. We start small — like 1–2 steps — and build it up so the dog learns, “the longer I stick with you, the better it gets.” Pretty soon, they’re locked in without you having to beg or constantly feed every step. Check it out, try it with your dog this week, and let me know how it goes. If you run into any hiccups, drop a comment — I’ll point you in the right direction.

Awesome video, and very informative! Can't wait to give this a shot and see how we progress.

I think our heel has gotten 100% better, we still need to work on heeling around distractions but since i started hand feeding and engagement drills its like night and day. I think the main problem was I thought she knew the command but she really didnt and now that she knows the expectation shes doing better with it. I'll take a video and post it for you within the next couple days! Happy training guys!
Heeling work
working on a moving heel, after implementing some engagement training using Jeffs method, and the difference is night and day! I have never had such great eye contact and engagement from Maisy when trying to get her to heel. We still have a ways to go, but we're definitely making some progress! 💪🏽

Motivation post
Hey everyone I’m out in Nh and it’s super raining and I always find myself a little deterred by the rain but remember you don’t have to be outdoors to get some work in! Your dog is only as good as you let them be,Have a great day folks 💪
Reactivity
Reactivity: who else here struggles with their dog's reactivity. Could be towards people, other dogs, bikes, squirrels you name it. Comment here and we can get a discussion going on what works, what doesn't work and I'll teach you guys my whole process for actually fixing it. @Aj Ryan

Maisy has been in our life since 2023. She's a Boarder Collie and is a super love bug, but I feel like she's insecure and a little timid so that comes out in reactivity which makes it seem like she's aggressive. I've been trying to build her confidence with some obedience and simple training, and agility and the reactivity has calmed down some but I don't believe it's anything significant. I'd say her worst triggers are other dogs and motorcycles. She sees these things and the reactivity is explosive to the point where people see her and automatically assume she's aggressive so they turn around and go the other way so she gets an automatic reward from this. I introduced a prong and established leash pressure and leash control so now I believe I have a a good foundation of yes since i was already positive reinforcement training and no positive punishment with the prong collar.I understand your concept of redirecting the dogs attention to you, and understand if you do that the dog never gets over threshold, but I feel like then she's not really learning how to actually work through those emotions. I guess I would say I don't have the knowledge and or skillset yet to help her work through the emotions and displace that energy getting back to baseline once she over threshold. Thanks for the comment Jeff i appreciate the information, and also thank you everyone else for your input as well!

Monday Kickoff: What’s Your Focus This Week?
Happy Monday everyone! 👋 Each week, we set an intention for our training. It doesn’t have to be big — sometimes the smallest habits create the biggest wins. 👉 What’s ONE thing you’d like to improve with your dog this week? More focus on walks? Practicing recall? Staying calm on place? Or just working in a daily 5-minute session? Drop your answer in the comments ⬇️ Setting your goal publicly will keep you accountable — and it gives us all a chance to encourage each other along the way. Let’s start the week strong! 💪🐶
