Do you sabotage yourself?
I've been rereading the Big Leap and he talks about how we all have an upper limit, the high end of our comfort zone where we might sabotage ourselves before ascending it. I'm curious if you've noticed this in your own life. I definitely hit one in 2022. Some of it was burn out--I didn't allow myself enough rest and fun to recooperate. And I once left a room of very successful authors, telling myself I did belong (even though I did!). And I see how I avoid being more visible on social media--there's some visibility I allow but I tend to control it. Denise DT talks about how some people get sick before launches, or don't allow themselves to launch at all! Or spend their money as fast as they make it, or give their money away or feel guilty about saving it. Or avoid doing the things that would make them successful, like marketing (I've done this too!). Think of a time you had some break out success or momentum and notice how you behaved. Did you celebrate? Allow yourself to rest? Or did you go out and wreck your car (I had an entrepreneurial ex-boyfriend who did this every time business went well)? No judgement, just notice! How do you sabotage yourself when reaching your upper limit?

I stop myself from doing visibility marketing, for sure. It's so hard when my "reason" (nope, it's an excuse) seems valid, because I've tied it to safety. I need to remap that story in my head so my brain stops telling me that's the truth and tries proving it with evidence.

@Lee Savino is there an ongoing Zoom or are we starting with Golden Angel's presentation? I can't find a link if we've started already.

@Lee Savino Oh, ok! That's what I had in my calendar (July 8th) but then my email said today and I quietly panicked that I missed the start. I LOVE THESE BOOTCAMPS so I don't want to miss any of them. 😅 I was sweatin' it for a minute. Thanks for the quick answer! 🫶

@Timea Albert Sure thing! I hope you sell this short story like fried snickers at the state fair! Oh, and on re-read, that "I'd-hurt-for-her" thing in the last paragraph: I can never remember if the word "kill" is allowed in I'd-kill-for-them trope descriptions on stuff like this, or if that's just social media pickiness. Maybe look into that and change hurt to kill to fit the trope better if you can get away with it. Also, those "commuter read" length stories are hot right now, so if you've got more Alaska-wilds in you, maybe consider that super-interesting landscape to tie more tropes together in a loosely-based "series" of standalone reads that work in the same world. Just a flash idea.

@Timea Albert oh yeah, I think 90-minute to 2-hr is the sweet spot, and something like 22k words hits that 2-hr category. My research is several months old though. So check that before committing. Plus, I’m in a slightly different genre, so maybe update for your specific niches.

Post your name (What you want to be called), pronouns and what genres you love to read/write! I'm Lee Savino, pronouns she/her. I love reading and writing spicy romance, especially paranormal or twisty gothic suspense sort of dark romance! Picture of me in Cancun - a trip I took Jan 2026 with my author bestie Renee Rose!

I’m AJ Rose, and my pronouns are they/them. However! I don’t want anyone worried about messing that up, so I’m cool with the pronouns people use as long as it’s from an honest and friendly place. I write gay romance that leans hard into dark themes, intense emotions, and/or dark humor, but always, always, ALWAYS ends with an HEA. And queer people need love as much now as ever, so I want to get my books in front of as many eyes as I can. My stories get spicy, but I try only to go for the heat as a part of the plot, and not just for more heat ratings with readers. Lee’s bootcamps have been invaluable to shifting my mindset, and I am thrilled to be here! I have a love of writing blurbs (from a childhood fantasizing about being an author, so I’d rewrite the blurbs on the back of my Christopher Pike and RL Stine books), which I know lots of authors wrinkle their noses at. So if you’ve got a blurb fighting back, talk to me! Maybe I can help! 💞
