๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ English Expressions: Riding Shotgun ๐Ÿš—
Hey everyone! ๐Ÿ‘‹ Todayโ€™s expression is โ€œriding shotgun.โ€ I learned this expression from John and Adamโ€™s Ruining Seinfeld podcast while preparing for my LME Sโ€™Nโ€™L class. They were discussing the scene from The Lip Reader (S06 E06), where Elaine says she would rather take a STAGECOACH than a CAR SERVICE to get to the meeting ๐Ÿ‘‰ It means sitting in the front passenger seat of a car, right next to the driver. People often say โ€œI call shotgun!โ€ to claim that seat before anyone else. Origin: The phrase comes from the American Old West. When STAGECOACHES carried money or valuable cargo, a guard would sit next to the driver holding a shotgun to protect against bandits. Over time, โ€œriding shotgunโ€ came to simply mean sitting in the front passenger seat. ๐Ÿค  Examples: โ€ข Iโ€™m tired of sitting in the back โ€” Iโ€™m riding shotgun today. ๐Ÿš— โ€ข โ€œShotgun!โ€ โ€” she called it before anyone else got in the car. ๐Ÿ˜„ โ€ข He rode shotgun while we drove across town. ๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ Figurative daily-life examples: โ€ข I called shotgun before the road trip started. ๐Ÿงณ โ€ข My friend was riding shotgun while I navigated through traffic. ๐Ÿšฆ โ€ข Whoever gets to the car first gets to ride shotgun. ๐Ÿ Now itโ€™s your turn! ๐Ÿ’ฌ Drop your own sentence using โ€œriding shotgunโ€ below ๐Ÿ‘‡ WE LEARN FROM EACH OTHER! ๐Ÿค

Usually I won't ride shotgun in a married man's car because I thought that's the unique seat for his wife.

@Rochelle Carr Wow, I didnโ€™t know that. I was taught to do that since I was young. So I keep this habit until now.๐Ÿ˜

I remember a classical line from the movie "Good Will Hunting"--which is โ€œHow do you like them apples?"

I have already joined Coach Richard and Vinnie's live classes this morning and will read some English materials that relate to my area. Of course, I should find time to repeat the DDM and PIRF assignments too. Keep going!
