If you've ever thought SH, CH and J and ZH sounds are as same as or similar with SH, CH and ZH sounds in Chinese, then you are totally wrong. Because you never ever shouldn't curl your tongue when you made these sounds in English. I didn't know and I was making them in a wrong way until Coach pointed out my issue last year. But the difficulty is that if you made them in a wrong way for many years, it's extremely tough to fix. Plus, if you are so good at making SH, CH and ZH sounds in Chinese, you even couldn't notice you are curling your tongue. Even if you can notice it, It's still difficult to control your tongue. After struggling with these sounds for a month, I asked Moxa(our kind, genius student) @Moxa Xie how to make these correct English sounds, and she taught me a trick: use ji, qi, xi(Chinese) for your tongue position -- I mean when you want to pronounce SH in English, don't say SH in Chinese but start with XI in Chinese and your tongue would be straight. So, the tongue position should be-- Ji(Chinese) = J(English) Qi(Chinese) = CH(English) Xi(Chinese) = SH(English) = ZH(English) I noticed there're more and more students have these issues so I want to share this here. I hope it would help you. This trick sounds very complicated but it works for me. Of course, aware of this trick is not enough, you need to use it to train your muscle memory. And if you're not sure if you have this issue or not or you want to know more, I recommend you ask our excellent Coach-- Coach Lan.
