Raw water pipe cleaning
In this video you’ll see the before and after of pipe cleaning and hopefully understand why it is important to clean the raw water pipes at least once a year. During the time of this video, the boat was hauled out of the water for annual maintenance and a “bottom job”. So the vessel had to be hooked up to what is called a “cooling tower” where its the towers job is to act like if the boat was in the ocean by using freshwater and a series of pipes going into the through hull valves. These pipes are what I call the “main veins” of any yacht or ship. If something were to happen to these pipes like get clogged or spring a leak, then you’ll have a major issue. Almost all systems onboard the vessel use cold raw water (or water from outside the boat, it can be fresh if in lakes), such as the main engines, generators, air conditioning, water makers, and exhaust cooling need constant flow of cold water from outside the boat to keep cool. I used the product “On Off” can be bought at almost any boating supply store like west marine. Be careful, wear gloves, that stuff is strong.

Raw water pipe cleaning
Heat Exchanger replacement
Sorry for video quality, these were some of my first ones. Here we are replacing the heat exchanger on a northern lights generator. The heat exchanger is a raw water system (aka salt water). The sometimes rapid change of sea temperature can cause the cooper nickel piping to cause sudden leaks. The heat exchanger is the sphere shaped object in the video. Inside there are about 20 tubes, looks like a honey combs from each end with the caps off. Every other tube has coolant and the other has salt water running through them. The cold sea water is used to cool the coolant enough to keep the engine from over heating. This process is formed from causing the surface temperature of the saltwater pipes cooling the surface temperature of the coolant pipes. The reason for replacement: We received a high bilge alarm while at anchor in the Caribbean at around 11pm. I quickly rushed to the engine room to find a massive leak in our heat changer on our port generator. Luckily we had two back up generators onboard that vessel.
