Mormon Apologetics: The Impossible Gospel
I recently came across "The Impossible Gospel" as a way to engage Latter_Day Saints apologetically. The speaker is Keith Walker. His methodology is very sound. He presses logical consistency that forces the Mormon to confront the nature of thier gospel. Notice he is very intentional about asking Mormon's to define their terms upfront, while being careful not to define them himself. Consider yourself. Your words hold more weight than another person's, and its harder to escape the boundaries you have set for yourself. the same principle appplies to apolgetic encounters. You have to let the person you're engaging define their own terms. You jop is to hold them to those defintions. Remember, Latter-Day Saints use a similar sounding vocabulary with a similar sounding dictionary. But there are enoormous differences lurking below the surface. The similarity can be (and will be) used as an escape hatch later. You have to press for clarity early and then stick to those definitions. I have posted the same lecture twice. I think it can be helpful to hear the same content delivered in multiple ways. The third video is a short, 25 minute breakdown thats very clear and systematic.

Wait… The Book of Mormon Sounds Monotheistic?
When the LDS missionaries came to my house they gave me a Book of Mormon (BoM). My first question was "Who is God in Mormonism?". The answer I found suprised me. Most Christians assume Mormonism has always taught what modern LDS missionaries teach today: three separate gods/exalted man theology. But if you just read the BoM on its own, and let the words speak for themselves, it sounds surprisingly monotheistic. For example: Look at Mosiah 15: 1 And now Abinadi said unto them: I would that ye should understand that God himself shall come down among the children of men, and shall redeem his people. 2 And because he dwelleth in flesh he shall be called the Son of God, and having subjected the flesh to the will of the Father, being the Father and the Son— 3 The Father, because he was conceived by the power of God; and the Son, because of the flesh; thus becoming the Father and Son— 4 And they are one God, yea, the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth. 5 And thus the flesh becoming subject to the Spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God, suffereth temptation, and yieldeth not to the temptation, but suffereth himself to be mocked, and scourged, and cast out, and disowned by his people. Mosiah 15:1–5: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/mosiah/15?lang=eng That's interesting isn't it. And there are more. This isn't a proof text. In fact, in Alma 11, in a very straight forward conversation Zeezrum asks Amulek “Is there more than one God?” and Amulek says “No.” Alma 11:28–29 https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/alma/11?lang=eng And 2 Nephi just staright up says it: “And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. 2 Nephi 31:21 https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/31?lang=eng
