From Dishwasher to Seven-Figure Icon: The Power of Your Story
Anthony Bourdain wasnโ€™t born a global superstar. In 2000, he was a chef with a modest salary who had spent years grinding in professional kitchens, starting as a dishwasher. Then, he wrote Kitchen Confidential. That single book sold over 1 million copies, catapulting him from the heat of the line to a seven-figure income and launching a multi-million dollar multi-media empire. The difference between a cook and a household name wasn't just the recipes โ€” it was his writerโ€™s voice. The next 90 days are going to change everything for the writers in this room. We have massive additions landing soon, including an exclusive guest editor Q&A, a brand-new pitching template, and our first community-wide writing challenge. As this community continues to grow, your opportunities for high-level paid work grow right along with it. Which of these are you most excited about? Vote in the poll below so I know where to focus my energy for you guys! +++ Oh, and send me questions youโ€™d like me to ask a guest editor! POLL: Whatโ€™s our next move? As I said, Iโ€™m levelling up the community over the next 90 days. Which of these new features is going to move the needle most for your writing career?

One of my favourite food books.
SUCH AN INTERESTING QUESTION
I saw this on the amazing Skool site, BYOB ('Bring Your Own Business โ†’ courageous rebels become rich women. Let's build $1k DAYS online & fund your freedom.) My question: there are a variety of countries represented here. Which languanges do you read and/or write? I am fluent in English. Coming from South Africa (and now living in Northern Ireland), I also speak one of the indigenous SA languages, Afrikaans. I spent my formative years in Namibia (then South West Africa, where German was - and still is - one of the spoken languages). I've been watching a thriller series on TV. It's in German, with English subtitles. I'm amazed at how how much I still understand, even after many years of not speaking the language! @Gwynne Conlyn I just love learning languages! If I'm going somewhere I always try to learn a bit. Currently teaching myself Japanese. During Covid I did Duolingo's entire High Valyrian course ๐Ÿ˜‚
RESPONSES, PLEASE?
"I'd love to hear how ppl are using their food writing skillsโ€ฆrecipe development? Cookbooks? Food blogging? Restaurant critic?" This is a question posed by @Amanda Mirrlees. I'd love to hear from you!

I've been writing food fiction! My food-themed sci-fi and fantasy collection 'Taste: Speculative Stories to Devour and Relish' comes out with Flame Tree Press next year. But I started as an amateur restaurant critic, and would love to get into that again, perhaps with some actual publications instead of an obscure blog!

@Gwynne Conlyn I'll take a look, thank you! The cake story I linked previously is in the collection, but I will find another extract to post.

But... where has all the cheese gone? ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿง€๐Ÿง€๐Ÿง€
Don't be afraid...
...to ask to speak to the chef! This is Galya, the manager and chef of stunning bistro Violas in Covent Garden. We had a lovely chat yesterday and I now know what the secret ingredient is in the dressing for her sumptuous heritage tomato, strawberry and burrata salad. The tomatoes in this dish have such different flavours - tart, sour, acid, which cuts through the warm sweetness of the strawberries. It is incredible.

@Gwynne Conlyn yes - a selection of heritage tomatoes. It is unbelievable how different each one of them tastes from the bland red blob we are sold as the standard in the UK.
