How is everyone doing? Give us an update on your business as we approach the end of summer! I'll go first - 2026 was a difficult year for us. We were EXTREMELY slow for most of the year. Finances took a huge hit and it's very tight right now. We shifted our bidding focus around a little bit this summer and finally we were able to start landing jobs again. We have $1.1million lined up thru April! A huge restaurant, a job for the military, a large office space remodel, and some commercial shell buildings. Our summer, we are wrapping up a church we started in March, its been our best year yet- although investing a lot of money’s back into the company. We got Jobber in June- our electricians now track job expenses for me and time so i got more clarity now. , got a bunch of residential service work, and potentially some commercial jobs. Other than that its been a good year for us, the Lord is good.

Software
Hey all! I'm in the beginning stages of planning my company. I want to start it on the side while I continue to work for my current employer. One thing I'm trying to figure out is what kind of software everyone's using. So for all your systems, what's everyone running? For estimating, project management, invoicing, bookkeeping, accounting etc? Also include if your focus is more on commercial, residential, industrial. I want to focus on commercial but may do residential in between projects Thanks in advance!

We started with Quickbooks for all of our estimates, invoicing and book keeping. I was doing book keeping my self, but when i was doing my first year taxes, my tax person offered to do bookkeeping. I agreed. Also all of our projects were residential, but as we grew, we naturally grew with the systems, and you gradually adapt. By the way, Quickbooks got really fancy recently, until now it always glitched and didn’t have much interface

Change orders
We recently completed a custom home project, I verbally told the customer there will be “extras” for all the changes, and they agreed “verbally “ I sent them a bill for 8k and they are crying about it and questioning everything we have done. Great Point- DONT BE AFRAID- write it out and BILL RIGHT AWAY!

@Tod Craig had a wall through, customer was very honest and understanding, i had to correct some items, but it could have been avoided.

How are you getting work?
Hey everyone! I hope you are are doing well. I want to put a question out there to get a feel for what is driving work/sales in your business. I'm interested what everyone finds success doing. What are you doing to get work? Answer for these 3 categories if you wouldn't mind. 1. Residential New Construction/Remodel 2. Residential/Commercial Service 3. 1. Residential- from repeat customers, very little new construction but mostly remodeling from higher end general contractors. 2. Service work comes from Google, also from repeat customers since we have been in business for 2.5 years- its mostly residential about 60% residential - 40% commercial 3. We recently started to bid on work in the commercial sector, its very competitive, we have been using building connected but thats about it. (Thats all we know) i would say right now we have about 4 of the smaller commercial projects so far. ( we got 5 electricians and a estimator) 4. 5.

Back story and hopes.
Hey guys. Little bit about me. Teeny tiny electrical contractor in Delaware. Literally just me, part time right now. I work full time at the utility as a relay tech. Got my masters license last year in April. So I’ve been doing it on the side. Business wise everything is legit, and all the costs are real. Looking to get guys working for me and run the van during the day while I’m here. Right now the hang up is finding a journey (someone I don’t have to hand hold) and finding enough work for a guy 40 hrs a week long term. Not sure how to make the jump.

Perhaps, look for a guy that can do part time. Youll be amazed how things can fall into place with more work.
