Leads when starting out.
Not sure if this will help anyone, but I’ve seen a few people asking about getting leads so thought I’d share what’s worked for me so far. I started out doing carpentry and got a recommendation for two bathrooms and a water closet (main and ensuite). At the time I only had about five weeks of work lined up, so I decided to take the leap into bathroom renovations. From there, the main way I’ve built things up—without really anyone knowing me—has been through lead services and supplier relationships. I signed up to Bizzo (similar to Jim’s leads for bathrooms). Basically, if franchisees don’t take a lead, it gets passed on if you’ve got it turned on. It’s around $65 per lead depending on competition. This year alone I’ve picked up 3 bathrooms from it, plus I’ve got another bigger job coming through (main bathroom, ensuite, and another smaller one). The other big thing has been building relationships with suppliers. I spent time at Beaumont Tiles just chatting and getting to know the team. Once I asked if they get many people looking for bathroom renos, they started sending people my way. In the last couple of weeks alone I’ve had about 5 leads from that, and I’ve already quoted a couple of decent jobs. Since the start of the year I’ve been doing about 2 bathrooms a month, and the pipeline keeps building without spending big money on marketing. I know some people are dropping $3k+ a month on leads and websites, which is tough when you’re just starting out. All I’ve done is: Made a simple website myself Signed up to Bizzo/Jim’s-style leads Built relationships with suppliers It’s worked well for me so far. Might not suit everyone, but could be worth a crack if you’re just getting started. I Also try my hardest to give the best coustmer services!

Love it @Douglas Nielsen ! I am sure this will be incredibly useful for people. Hopefully @Kuros Tavana can see this, I know he was asking about leads yesterday.

Hey @Douglas Nielsen just had a chat to Steve about this and these were his words paraphrased "This is brilliant Douglas, for this stage and where you're at this is the exact stuff you should be doing. It's very important for everyone consider supplier relationships. Most people often overlook this. When Novalé was first starting out, there was a 30/30/30 split between Google ads, supplier relationships, and referrals, and then the other 10% were random things like signage. It is very important to note that you don't need to spend thousands of dollars a month on different types of marketing material. The relationships that you already have are crucial. Keep up the great work, you are doing the right things. This is fantastic to see, especially within such a short time frame of only starting a couple months ago."

Great seeing @Kuros Tavana @Nathan Curran @Douglas Nielsen @Luke Saide in the call today. Heaps of information in this one so i have attached a summary and key takeaways. Please let me know if you like that summary doc and format of it or if you would like an even shorter simplified version.

windows in shower areas
Hey guys, just chasing some clarity on how everyone is handling existing windows in wet areas — specifically ones within ~1500mm of a shower outlet (so inside the splash zone). From my understanding, under the DTS provisions they don’t really comply as-is, but heaps of renovations keep them in place. How are people dealing with this in practice? Are certifiers accepting them as existing (kind of like a grandfathered situation)? Or are you needing to go down the Performance Solution route to justify keeping them? Also curious how everyone is approaching the glazing side — especially around safety glass requirements when you’re not fully replacing the window. Feels like there’s a bit of a grey area in the reno space with this stuff. Keen to hear how others are getting these signed off.

Hey Douglas, this is from Bryan our head of Enablement & QA: "It’s definitely “a grey area” in the renovation space! Most Bathroom renovations fall under the category of “exempt works” and do not require a Development Application, which means renovators are often flying under the radar where certifications and final sign-off are concerned. Complying with the NCC and Australian Standards for Waterproofing is becoming quite complex for renovators, as the legislation is designed around new construction, and the two pathways contradict each other to some extent. We take a Performance Solution based approach here, but are currently only taking on projects that fall into the “exempt works” category, so the methods aren’t scrutinised. We are accountable to warranty obligations, and attention to detail is critical for waterproofing!! All new windows are glazed with safety glass, and installed without timber reveals if possible, using a commercial window frame with a masonry clip/bracket. For timber framed walls, we’d install PVC curtain membrane to the framework, line the walls and reveal, and then apply a paint-on membrane. For full masonry construction with existing windows, we’re typically replacing “like for like” in terms of waterproofing and tiling, and generally don’t reglaze windows. For timber framed construction with existing windows, we cut the reveal back flush to the framework, pack and fix it off to the framework to ensure it’s solid, install the PVC curtain membrane to protect the framework, install the wall linings, and then apply a paint-on membrane" please see the attached construction detail, this is the exact one used here at Novalé. Hope this helps!
