Let’s talk about staffing struggles 😩
Hey everyone 👋 I wanted to be really honest today - my biggest issue at the moment is staffing. Finding the right people, keeping the right people, managing reliability, energy, communication… it’s just a lot. Sometimes it feels like no matter how good your systems are, you’re constantly firefighting around people — sickness, motivation dips, personality clashes, or just trying to get everyone to care as much as you do! I’m realising that the hardest part of running a business isn’t the dogs, the marketing, or even the finances - it’s the humans. How’s everyone else finding this side of things lately? Are you managing to build a reliable team, or are you in the same boat with staff changes and frustrations? I’d also love it if we could share some tips on team management and how to keep staff happy in their roles. I do try to put a lot of effort into this but maybe I’m missing something? Working with dogs is hard physical And dirty work, I completely get that so how can we make their lives that little bit better! Would love to hear how you’re all handling it - any wins, lessons, or tips that have helped you keep things running smoothly. 💛 Jess

Hi Jess, As a boarding kennel owner, I completely understand your frustrations. I’ve been in a similar situation myself. Right before Easter, two of my best staff members had a massive argument—complete with swearing—and it was incredibly challenging to manage. Then, just recently, I received more complaints about our service in five days than I had in the past three years combined. What really helped me turn things around were two key steps: 1.Engaging an outside counselor: I brought in a professional counselor to help my team address their issues, whether work-related or personal. It gave them a safe space to process and work through challenges. 2.Facilitating self-reflection: After the complaints, I shut down the business for a morning and brought in a professional trainer. We had the entire team evaluate their own performance and score themselves against our company values. The self-reflection scores were humbling—most were around 3-4 out of 10—but it sparked a lot of growth and accountability. These steps have made a big difference, but ultimately, I’ve learned that success comes down to finding those special few people who truly align with your vision and company values plus creating an environment where they feel valued and want to stay. It’s about making it more than just a job for them. Hang in there—you’re not alone in this!
