When are your TRIGGER times for Overeating?
When we struggle with overeating, it might FEEL like we eat all the time, all day and every night. But, in truth, when we stop and think about it, there are usually two or three times in our day or week that can really trigger us to binge and not be able to stop. For me, it’s evening time…if I eat after 6 pm, it’s hard for me to stop. I’m often tired, willpower is low, and I just want to keep going with whatever mindless thing I’m doing. It’s a trigger time for both eating and for compulsive social media use. What helps me with evenings is to have a filling meal between 4:30 and 5:30 and close the kitchen at 6, turn off phones and screens at 7:30. Having a book that I look forward to reading at night also helps. It’s nourishing to read and doesn’t feel addictive. Driving is another Trigger time for me. If I have food next to me when I’m on a long drive, it’s way too easy for me to eat mindlessly and overdo it. I ate a whole bunch of protein bars this way one time! What helps me with driving is to either not have access to food at all, or to just have some cut up veggies or fruits and a small quantity of nuts that I can snack on. Having a good audiobook to listen to helps me avoid boredom during long drives. In the podcast below, Dr. Cara Fuhrman shares that coming home after a date or time with friends was a big trigger time for bingeing for her. What helped her overcome that was setting up a nourishing bath for herself when she got home, with electric candles, her favorite bath pillow, bath salts, etc. This way, she had something to look forward to when she got home that had nothing to do with food. What are your Trigger Times, fellow Thriver…the times when it’s harder to eat healthy, the times when it’s easy to overeat? Are there nourishing things you can do for yourself during these times which have nothing to do with food? What kind of support do you need to make this happen for yourself? Take a few moments to think about this for yourself, maybe journal about it, maybe share in the comments.
