This dog is now extinct
This is the Falkland Islands Aguara dog, the only mammal native to the Falkland Islands. Or it was. It became extinct in 1876, because you guessed it, men (I would say people but let’s be honest😉). Darwin predicted it would become extinct in the early 1800s as he saw the writing on the wall. It was a solitary, coastal predator that preyed on birds, seal carcasses, small mammals and probably anything it could get its paws on. This particular print, an original I picked up in an old book shop here in England (antique animal prints are my JAM) is by William Home Lizars (1788-1859) It’s pretty old, was made well before this beautiful animal left the planet. I also have the Quagga, dodo and various others that were made before they became extinct. My unicorn: literally, a unicorn. That would be the ultimate find. What original animal print would YOU most like to see? Srsly, I may have it and can post!

This is so interesting and looks so much like a fox! So were these ever domesticated?
Who was your childhood dog?
I expect most of us had a childhood dog. If you're like me, this dog was - and forever will be - THE dog. The childhood dog, the special one you remember as your first. First real connection with another living being other than family & friends. First lessons in how to share in a responsibility (feed/walk/pick up poop). First loss. My childhood dog was called Sally Ann. Just Sally for short. She was a Shelty, one of the 'blue' varieties. Short but fast. Being a Shelty, Sally would 'herd' us kids as we ran around the back yard, but she never hurt us. It was about the chase for her. She was also rock solid in being there for me. I didn't have many friends. I don't have many 'moment' memories because I was so young, but the few I have are so visual. I remember I would get on my back, and work on fixing her belly like she was a car. She'd just stand there, patiently. Her favorite thing was the beach, we found out later. We lived in North Dakota, so by 'beach' I mean lake with tiny waves. The way she would attack those waves with her snappy jaws... she just had the biggest smile on her face. When she passed, I remember the phone call I got during class. I was in high school, and for some reason my parents thought I should know right then and there. I was confused, I didn't realize that she was so unwell, and I was so caught up in my teenage angst I lost out on those last months with her. We had her cremated. We'd always meant to bring her back to those lakes, to her happiest moments. But time passed, we had moved away, and I don't think we ever did that. And then...she just became a lovely memory. Her final lesson being that if we let other species into our lives, they can bring tremendous joy. Sally Anne. The Special One. Who was YOUR first dog, your Special one? (pictures would be amazing)

Your story @Paul Ramos , brought tears to my eyes. My childhood dog that had the most impact (I know I had one when I was around 4/5, but have very little memory of) was Zach, a husky/black collie mix. He looked like a german shepherd really. He was around from when I was 10 until I moved out at 18. He was the best dog, put up with things like dressing him up and taking pictures. He would pull us on sleds and such. Such a good boy. Thanks for the memory.

Thanks @Amy Gallagher for this post - that actually looks super good, like what I aspire to do to my breakfast! 🤭 (dog-safe) peanut butter / (Greek) yogurt / blueberries + shaved carrot YASS

These pads look so cool! But @Paul Ramos I am not sure that any of us would look really cute using them like our dogs would. 🙃 😆
No Googling! Poll - which of these dog breeds is FAKE?
Nothing like a random poll to wind up your week. Which of these dog breeds does NOT exist?..

@Amy Gallagher same! Mine was a complete guess, but it looks like I am not alone in thinking so! And I always thought I knew most dog breeds...this post proves I know not much. Hahah
Something big is coming
For the past 3 weeks I’ve been nose to the grindstone working on a problem that literally every other dog struggles with. Yet there are no (simple practical) solutions. I’ve found one. Gonna help a lot of dogs. And owners. One week! Stay tuned! What dog problem is Paul up to? The hint is in the 1st sentence 🤔

I voted behavior, since that is what I got out of the first sentence as a clue. But honestly I would tune in for any of these! In the moment Malibu picture for tax ❤️
