I put this up on my Facebook and I wanted to post it here as well. Business is tough and it can take its toll on our mental health along with everything else. It's something we just stick in a box in the back corner until we run out of tape to keep it shut and then it busts wide open and floods everything.
Alright gents, I'm going to say some things we don't really talk about in the open.
Take care of your mental health this year. We take care enough on the outside, we need to take care of the electric jellyfish that controls our meat mech suit. I hadn't taken care of mine and it was almost my last year. So here's some things my therapist told me that, no bullshit, actually work.
Humans are the only species that give a damn about what others think about us. Look at a monkey at the zoo. If he has to shit, he just does it. Sometimes he'll do it in his hand and throw it because he doesn't care.
Depression and anxiety are feelings. Instead of focusing on those feelings, redirect your thoughts and energy. Make a list of goals for relationships, health, and career. When you start focusing on the negative, shift into thinking about what you can do to attain those goals. They don't have to be grandiose, just something for the positive.
What you do and think do not change who you are as a person. You are you. If you do something dumb, you are not dumb, your action was. Look at a football field. At the beginning of the season the field is pristine. As the year goes on, it gets painted, holes are made, and it gets soggy. The field itself is still the same field regardless of what happened to it.
Take care of yourself this year, brothers. We're too damn hard on ourselves because we hold ourselves to a high standard. Don't let the demons win, reach out instead. Talk to someone whether it be me, another friend, a family member, or a therapist. There's no shame in it and it's better than the alternative.
