Implementing Feedback: My Channel Transformation
As promised, here is what 2 channel reviews taught me about my channel and the changes I've just made. Our channels are living breathing things and constantly evolving so these changes aren't perfect but they are progress in the direction I want to go.
One review was at VidSummit: a 20 minute free consultation by a member of the 1of10.com team. They also have a YT channel @ 1of10pod.
The other review was by Claire Sara when she was offering free reviews to some of her newsletter subbies. Her channel is @ ClaireSara and she makes really cool vids.
Their feedback rang true with me so I was excited to implement their suggestions.
As is my usual scrappy style, here is the email I sent to Claire to let her know I had taken action.
I need to tighten up ‘YouTube Over 40’ niche. When people look at my channel it isn't clear exactly what my channel is about. Is it vlogs? Superheroes? (actually it is!) YouTube growth tips?
Look to use YT community posts area
Post posts more frequently
Look at livestream comments for clues on videos to make. What problems are people trying to solve?
Do relatable updates on anything for YouTubers Over 40 that I have found helpful because others will find this info helpful too
I own some tech so make easy to follow videos how to set it up and use it (the kind of video I love)
Reinstate 'Home' page tab that is first on our tabs when we go to a channel - can use this to put the most recent video in there or an intro video
Can put posts in the Home page! Look into this
Don’t be afraid to repeat things I have made in a different way
Don’t be afraid to make videos about things like updates - it doesn’t matter that Kevin Kolbe made a video about YouTube updates or whatever. If there are 5 YouTube updates I am excited about and will use, I can make a video about that (and then use them)
PROBLEM: It is unclear what my channel is about, is it a vlogging channel is it about YouTube growth?
ACTION TAKEN: Unlisted all 10 of my non-niche videos (personal vlogs, Deadpool, eggs for breakfast…
PROBLEM: Not using my Home page because this is like the profile people land on by default or often go to when they land on a channel page
ACTION TAKEN: Re-installed the Home Page. For now I have put my most recent Live in there as it is my most recent video
ALSO I have:
  • Reassessed my pillars of content and came up with 1. Mindset and motivation, 2. Community and Connection and 3. Gear and Tutorials
  • Redesigned my banner art and changed my profile pic (the black banner I had didn't make sense with my profile photo and bright blue background)
  • Redesigned the description in my ‘About’ and added my hi@youtubeover40 email (where there was none after removing it due to spammers)
  • Started tidying up playlists
What are your thoughts on this? Have you been making changes on your channel recently? Check out this bit of motivation below from Leila Hormozi and my unlisted videos (yes, I lose the watch hours - which makes sense that you only get watch hours when your videos are public).
Snippet of video below taken from Leila Hormozi: 'How to level up so fast they won't recognize you.'
