Whatever it is that you want to do, whatever it is that you want to accomplish - writing a book or climbing Mount Everest (both of which, by the way, I want to do), the first step is to take the first step.
I don’t know if it is easy or hard, but I know it is the most important thing to do because when you take the first step, it inevitably leads to the second step, which leads to the third step, and so on. Before you know it, you have picked up momentum and you are on your way.
Your first step could be anything. If you want to write a book, your first step may be as simple as buying a notebook and writing “My First Book” on the cover. If you don’t have anything clever or meaningful to write, don’t fret and more importantly, don’t scold yourself. It could mean that the second step may not have made itself visible to you. Congratulate yourself, give yourself a pat on the back, then get to writing. It is less important what you write than the fact that you write. Writers write…
...and climbers climb. If you want to climb Mount Everest, find the nearest hill and get climbing.
I have run into magazine articles in the dentist’s office while waiting for my children to get the work done and I was given a book titled, “Together On Top of the World”, a biography of the first couple to have climbed the highest point on all seven continents together.
I’ll never forget the summer of 1983 when I traveled from Chicago to LA and back on a Greyhound bus. It was in Clinton, OK that we had a two-hour layover for the bus to be cleaned and serviced. It was a Sunday afternoon and I decided to take a walk. I walked into a used bookstore and right in front of the entrance was a table with an assortment of books and a sign that read, “Everything on this table for $1.00”. What a bargain!
The first book that caught my eye was titled My Self, Your Self, and the Self of the Universe. The preface told me that I was reading this because I was meant to be reading it. That sealed the deal.
That book, written by someone from a different religious background and following, taught me more about my own faith and was largely influential in a quantum leap in my spiritual evolution.
Whatever you need in life will always be there for you. All you have to do is take the first step toward your goal, toward the fulfillment of your desire, and the next step will be revealed to you at the right time and the right place. You don’t always get to choose when, where or how.
Don’t ever discount your desires. Your desires are the guiding light for your purpose in life.
“The desire to do (a thing) is proof that you have within you the power which can do it.”
Wallace D Wattles
