What’s the Deal with “Legs” in Your Wine Glass🍷
(And Should You Care?) 🍇👀
You swirl your wine, look at the glass, and notice those streaks running down the sides.
Someone next to you says, “Ooh, look at the legs!”
But… what does that even mean? Let’s break it down—without the wine snobbery.
What Are “Wine Legs”?
Also called “tears,” legs are the drips or streaks that form on the inside of your glass after you swirl your wine.
But here’s the truth: they don’t tell you if the wine is good or bad.
They mostly reveal two things:
🍷 Alcohol content – More legs usually = higher alcohol
🍷 Sugar level – Sweeter wines form thicker, slower legs
✨ So no, more legs doesn’t mean “better wine.”
It just tells you the wine has a bit more body or sweetness.
Why Do People Still Talk About Them?
Because they look cool.
And let’s be honest, watching the wine slowly roll down the glass while you pretend to analyze it is half the fun.
How to Spot Them Like a Pro:
1️⃣ Swirl your glass gently
2️⃣ Hold it up to the light
3️⃣ Watch how quickly the “legs” form and fall
Fast, thin legs?
Likely a lighter wine
Slow, thick legs?
Probably fuller-bodied or higher in alcohol/sugar
When Do They Matter?
Mostly when comparing styles.
Tasting two wines side by side?
The legs can give you a visual cue about which one might be richer or more intense.
Your Turn!
Have you ever judged a wine by its legs?
Or do you just swirl for the fun of it?
