(Before You Even Taste It) 🍇✨
Ever opened a bottle and wondered, “Is this going to be amazing or a total letdown?”
Before you even take a sip, here’s a quick 5-second test to tell if your wine is going to deliver.
1️⃣ Check the Legs (Swirl Test) 🌀
Swirl your wine in the glass and watch how it drips down the sides.
Slow, thick legs = Higher alcohol, richer texture.
Fast, thin legs = Lighter body, more refreshing.
✨ What It Means:
This won’t tell you if the wine tastes good, but it gives you a clue about the body and mouthfeel.
2️⃣ Give It a Quick Sniff 👃
If the wine smells like wet cardboard, vinegar, or a damp basement—🚨 it’s probably corked or spoiled.
A good wine should smell fruity, floral, spicy, or earthy—but never off.
✨ Pro Move:
If a wine smells weird, let it sit for a few minutes.
Some funky smells blow off with air.
3️⃣ Look at the Color 👀
Hold your glass up to the light.
White Wines: If it’s deep golden (and it’s not an aged Chardonnay or orange wine), it might be past its prime.
Red Wines: If it’s brownish instead of ruby or deep purple, it could be oxidized.
✨ Quick Rule:
Bright colors = fresh wine. Dull or brown hues = maybe past its best.
4️⃣ The First Sip Test 🍷
Take a sip and pay attention to the first 2 seconds.
If the wine has good acidity and structure, you’ll feel it instantly.
A dull, flat taste means it might be low quality or improperly stored.
5️⃣ The Aftertaste (a.k.a. The Finish) 🎯
Good wines linger after you swallow.
If the flavors disappear in 1-2 seconds, it might be a cheaper or mass-produced wine.
If it lasts 5+ seconds, congrats—you’ve got a well-made wine!
✨ Fun Fact:
Some high-end wines have a finish that lasts over 30 seconds!
