Who is a Valuepreneur?
Imagine you’re at the start line of a big race. You’re excited but nervous, clutching a large, bright light bulb in your hands, a symbol of the brilliant business idea you’ve been dreaming about. That’s you as a “wantrepreneur,” someone who dreams of starting their own business but hasn’t taken the first step yet. No worries, everyone starts from this place!
Now, look at the “entrepreneur” lane. This is where you’ve kicked off your run, faced some hurdles, tripped a bit, but got back up and kept running. Entrepreneurs don’t just dream; they act. They seize opportunities, face risks, work hard, and transform their dreams into real businesses. Sure, the race can be rough, with obstacles causing stumbles, but the key is to dust yourself off after a fall and keep running.
However, let’s be real: many runners stumble too many times and can’t finish the race. This could be due to misjudged jumps, running out of energy, stronger competitors, or a poorly chosen path. Indeed, according to Forbes, nine out of ten entrepreneurs fail to finish their race.[1] So, how can you boost your chances of winning this business race?
Enter the “valuepreneur,” the superstar of the business world. They don’t just start running without a plan. They take detours from the racetrack to chat with their potential customers, understanding their needs and continuously testing and improving their business ideas. They listen, make smart changes, and always aim to make their customers happy and their business a hit.
Here’s how the race goes: "wantrepreneurs" are poised at the starting line, clutching their brilliant ideas, entrepreneurs are running and facing hurdles and often failing, while "valuepreneurs" are the game-changers. They not only participate in the race but also pause intermittently to comprehend their customers’ needs. Running this race can be hard, with many racers failing, but valuepreneurs improve their winning odds by always focusing on adding value to their business strategy.
Valuepreneurs are runners who understand their fans and their needs and plan their race to please them. This fan-focused approach leads to a performance that gets cheers from the crowd, increasing the chances of a successful run.
Every step of the race, from the first warm-up to the final sprint, is a chance to add value. As you move forward, your strategy gets better, and the risk of stumbling gets lower.
Keep in mind, not all runners are valuepreneurs, but all valuepreneurs are indeed runners. The difference? Valuepreneurs use customer interactions as their secret weapon to win the race. They continually test their business ideas through engaging and listening to their customers, tweaking, and adjusting their hypothesis until they’ve perfected a solution that truly meets their customers’ needs.
It’s not just about holding the brightest light bulb. It’s about using that bulb’s brightness to make a business that meets the fans’ hopes without making the ticket—your product—too pricey for the fans to enjoy.
Valuepreneurship works well with lean principles, which are all about being efficient and continually getting better. By combining these valuepreneurship and lean principles, you can create a business that customers love and a race that’s successful and efficient.
In the end, being a successful valuepreneur means focusing on your customers, adding value at every step, and finding a balance between making your business better and keeping it affordable. Remember, it’s a journey, and every step you take—from being a wantrepreneur to becoming a valuepreneur—brings you closer to your dream of winning the business race.
