You know that feeling of burning through all your Upwork connects in a single day only to get 0 invites? Yeah, hurts more than a breakup.
That will only raise doubts in your mind about Upwork. That’s what am here to address. Despite the pessimistic views about that are popular online, I will choose to talk about the often overlooked things about Upwork that are so good but are often taken for granted.
Upwork is highly effective for acquiring leads, especially for fledgling businesses or freelance outfits:
- Fledgling Business: A company just starting, lacking a defined offer, product-market fit, or lead generation strategy. Customer sourcing is the primary concern.
- Freelance Outfit: An individual doing the work/service fulfillment, without a stable, consistent client sourcing mechanism.
Upwork solves these problems due to four key reasons:
1️⃣ Favourable Commissions: The 10% commission (for lifetime earnings over $10K with a client) might seem high, but consider what it provides:
--> Escrow System: A third-party holds funds, reducing pressure for clients, especially on fixed-price deals, and boosting job acquisition for new freelancers lacking credibility. This alone can cost more than 10% on smaller deals.
--> Payment Processing: Upwork covers the ~3% payment processing fee (like Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30), effectively reducing Upwork's "take" to around 7%.
--> Messaging Platform & Meeting System: Built-in tools for client communication.
--> Job Pool (Most Important): Access to customers you would never otherwise contact, "ripe for the taking." The 10% fee for this lead generation is a "no-brainer."
2️⃣ Competition Sucks:
--> Despite millions of freelancers, the majority of the competition is low quality.
--> By applying diligence and the strategies in this guide, you can easily outperform most other freelancers.
3️⃣ Customers Already Want What You're Selling (High Buyer Awareness):
--> Buyer Ladder Concept: In sales, prospects are at different levels of awareness:
--> Lowest Level: Doesn't understand the problem, the solution, or why you're the right fit. (e.g., selling a CRM to a business unaware they need one). This requires selling on three separate levels.
--> Upwork Prospects (99%): Are at the top end of the buyer ladder. They understand the problem and the solution (they've written a job post asking for it).
--> Your Job: Simply to show them why you are the best decision among service providers. This is the simplest form of selling. Upwork allows you to skip the difficult stages of problem and solution awareness, enabling you to learn client management skills more easily.
4️⃣ Proven Platform:
--> Many successful freelancers (including the speaker) have made significant money on Upwork.
--> It's a long-standing, stable platform worth investing time in daily for a few months.
I have researched 100s of cover letters and applications from successful freelancers and compiled all their strategies into a single template (refer to the image). Due to the nature of this platform external links may get this post deleted. I will send it to you personally if you comment GUIDE.
