Within the Templar tradition, the rose cross carries a precise etymological origin that Timothy Hogan traces directly to ancient Egypt. When the Templars encountered Rostau the sacred name for the subterranean passages beneath the Giza plateau they transliterated it through Latin: Ros became rose, Tau became cross. The symbol was never decorative. It was a direct encoding of Egyptian sacred geography, preserved in plain sight across centuries of suppression. The rose growing out of the cross is also a map of consciousness evolving out of matter the same idea as the lotus rising from the mud of the pond. Matter is the fixed plane of the cross, and consciousness is what blooms upward through it. This is part of what the Templars were actually doing with their symbolism, hiding a complete philosophy of spiritual evolution inside an image anyone could see but few could fully read.
