It’s not lava. It’s not fire. It’s water. And although it may be hard to believe, these images show a real phenomenon. It occurs at Horsetail Fall in Yosemite National Park, California, when an extraordinary coincidence takes place for just a few days each year. The water has to be falling. The sky must remain clear. And the sun, just before setting, must hit the waterfall at the exact right angle. Then this happens. For a few moments, the water seems to turn into fire. The waterfall glows with shades of gold, orange, and red, giving the impression that a stream of lava is cascading down the immense wall of El Capitan. But nothing is burning. It’s simply water, rock, and light coming together at the exact right moment. There are spectacles that humans can create. And there are others that we can only stand and watch. It’s one of those wonders of creation that still manage to leave us speechless. Share this with someone who needs to be reminded that the world still holds wonders capable of astonishing us.
