Adam asked the question on Day 1. I realized that while it's great for me to be reading and learning, I'm absolutely wasting the 'what could be for others' by not sharing some of the gold nuggets from it.
"Winning Begins at Home" by Randy Gravitt:
Willie: But first, I want you to spend some time defining what kind of family you want to have. There's no one way to do that. For me, I asked myself questions. What kind of relationship do I want to have with my wife? What do I want our communication and our connection to feel like? What kind of father do I want to be? What kind of children do we hope to raise? How do I want the people in my home to feel about me?
John: I honestly haven't given those questions much thought.
Willie: Sadly, most people don't. I spent years in the construction business and it was amazing how many people asked me to build them a house without thinking about what they really wanted. I learned there's a difference in a generic set of drawings and a custom blueprint. The families with a blueprint ended up with the nicest homes. If I can be blunt, what you describe sounds more like a spec home than a dream home. The place to start is what I call prerequisite one: define what kind of family you want.
Prerequisite two:
Willie: Decide why.
John: Decide why what?
Willie: Decide why you want to have a family. What is your motivation? If you can define what kind of family you want and decide why you want to have a family, you will be perfectly positioned to win at home.
